Republican presidential debate No. 5: The biggest winner and loser

Debate

Without a doubt, the biggest winner of the last Republican presidential debate of 2015 was Jeb Bush. And without a doubt, the biggest loser was Ben Carson.
Since the beginning of the campaign for the 2016 presidential election, Bush has been criticized for being too passive. And indeed, until the fifth Republican presidential debate, he seemed unable to step up to the issues. And at times, he seemed uninterested and dispassionate.
But during the debate Tuesday night (Dec. 15) in Las Vegas, Nev., the son of former President George H.W. Bush and brother of former President George W. Bush showed some passion, soul and lots of fight. Bush wasn’t shy about attacking fellow Republican candidate Donald Trump and wouldn’t back down when the controversial candidate continually insulted him.
Bush deserves lots of credit for being the only candidate to step up to the Republican Party’s bully. Unfortunately, this will only take him so far. He might have waited too long to show some passion and conviction.
For Carson, the debate was clearly his last chance to remove any doubts about his abilities to lead, and his knowledge and views regarding national security. Carson hasn’t been clear about where he stands on national security. Throughout his campaign, the candidate has been asked multiple times about the subject, but has repeatedly responded with long, complicated, unclear answers. Unfortunately, the debate didn’t clarify anything; Tuesday was Carson’s worst performance of the five Republican debates.
In Carson’s defense, he was obviously fighting a bad cold. He could hardly speak a few words before having to cough. His opening statement was fairly good, but after that, the candidate looked lost and unaware of what was going on. In short, the debate was a train wreck for the neurosurgeon.
The winner of the night is so low in the polls that one good performance probably won’t help him much. The loser of the night has consistently performed badly at the debates, but still remains second in the polls behind Trump.
Time will tell if either of them has enough fight to take down the Republican Party’s bully.
