Adriana y Uzziel Pecina aún recuerdan cuando se conocieron en 1993.
“Los dos somos de Kansas City y nuestras familias se conocían entre sí”, dijo Adriana durante una entrevista reciente. “No sabíamos del uno o el otro hasta que fuimos a una conferencia en Chicago …, (donde) tuvimos que hablar de la importancia … (de) la educación en la comunidad hispana para … (incentivar) a los jóvenes a continuar su educación.”
Con el tiempo, se casaron y tuvieron cuatro hijos.
A medida que continúan su vida de casados, los Pecina tratan de disfrutar de su tiempo juntos aplicando lo que les gusta hacer: educar y ayudar a la comunidad.
“Vemos la importancia de la educación para sobresalir en este país.”, dijo Adriana. “Nos gusta promover eso juntos dentro de nuestras organizaciones y trabajos. Si hay algo que nadie puede quitarle es la educación”.
Los Pecina puede dar fe de la importancia de la educación por sus experiencias personales. Ambos tienen una maestría – y su educación, sin duda, les ayudó a desembarcar sus respectivos puestos de trabajo. Uzziel es un profesor en la Universidad de Missouri-Kansas City. Adriana es la oficial de programas de la Fundación de Cuidado de la Salud de Kansas City.
Los dos también están involucrados con su iglesia local y con las actividades de sus hijos. Ellos siempre encuentran tiempo para actividades familiares, dijeron. Esas actividades incluyen cantar cada domingo en el coro de la iglesia y cenar cada noche con sus hijos, en donde disfrutan hablando de lo que está pasando en sus vidas.
“Nos gusta hacer muchas cosas juntos”, dijo Uzziel. “Todos los domingos, vamos a la iglesia, donde estamos muy activos. Somos voluntarios para cantar, leer y dar clases …. Además, si hay una actividad en la escuela, nos gusta ayudar recaudando fondos u otras cosas”.
A medida que los Pecina se preparan para celebrar su aniversario número 23, aconsejan a otras parejas que no piensan en el matrimonio como la perfección. Habrá momentos buenos y malos tiempos; pero con el apoyo del uno al otro, un matrimonio puede funcionar.
“Siempre tratamos de ser mejores”, dijo Adriana. “Todos los días no son fácil – y hay momentos buenos y difíciles …. También es importante vivir (en) el momento”.

Couple working together since 1993

Adriana and Uzziel Pecina still remember when they first met in 1993.
“We both are from Kansas City and our families knew each other,” Adriana said during a recent interview. “We didn’t know each other until we went to a conference in Chicago …, (where) we had to talk about the importance … (of) education in the Hispanic community to … (encourage) young people to continue their education.”
Eventually, they got married. They have four children.
As their married life continues, the Pecinas try to enjoy their time together by pursuing what they love to do: educate and help the community.
“We see the importance of education to become a better person in this country,” Adriana said. “We like to promote that together within our organizations and jobs. If there is something no one can take away from you, (it) is education.”
The Pecinas can attest to the importance of education from personal experience. Both of them have a master’s degree – and their education, no doubt, helped them land their respective jobs. Uzziel is an assistant professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Adriana is the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City program officer.
The two also are involved with their local church and with their kids’ activities. They always find time for family activities, they said. Those activities include singing every Sunday in their church choir and having nightly dinner with their children, where they enjoy taking about what’s happening in their lives.
“We like to do a lot of things together,” Uzziel said. “Every Sunday, we go to church, where we are very active. We volunteer to sing, read and teach classes…. Also, if there’s an activity at school, we like to help … (with) fund-raisers or anything (else).”
As the Pecinas prepare to celebrate their 23rd anniversary, they advise other couples to not think of marriage as perfection. There will be good times and hard times; but with support from each other, a marriage can work.
“We always try to better ourselves,” Adriana said. “Every day is not easy – and there are nice and difficult moments…. It is also important to live (in) the moment.”
