How to keep your children safe when using social media

Nowadays, it’s impossible to keep your children from using social media. But there are ways for you to keep them safe when they’re using it – or surfing the Internet in general. They include the following:
*Check the material they’re consuming: Occasionally, ask your children to let you see their phones. Make sure they’re looking at age-appropriate material. If they’re watching and reading inappropriate content, let them know and block it.
*Emphasize the importance of privacy: Encourage your children to post and share stuff strictly with their friends. Make sure they understand that, if their profile is public, many people they don’t know might have access to their personal information and pictures.
*Make sure the location setting on their apps and electronic devices is off: By allowing an app to access a location, it can make your children vulnerable to being victimized by criminals.
*Encourage your children to blog or post pictures and videos about positive stuff: Social media, unfortunately, can be a place for children to engage in cyber-bullying, and send inappropriate content to other children. Make sure your children are helping to make social media enjoyable for other children.
*Make sure they’re not sharing personal information, such as the school they attend or where they hang out with their friends: Tell you children they may blog or post pictures and videos, provided they take the proper precautions.
