“Me hacía falta mi cultura, mi gente ….

KC area welcoming many immigrants

By Paula Alzate

According to the U.S Census, immigrants make up 4 percent of Missouri’s population, with almost 125,000 immigrants in the Kansas City area alone. Many of them come with dreams, expectations and opportunities to grow.
Kansas City seems to be helping them pursue their dreams and opportunities, as Eduardo Castano (Castaño in Spanish) will attest.
In 2008, the Ecuadorian native arrived here with a soccer scholarship to play at an area college. He still lives in the area, owns a house, has a job and is raising a family.
According to Castano, Kansas City gave him what Ecuador didn’t.
“When I first came (here), I didn’t know any English,” he recalled. “I missed my culture, my people…. I thought many times about going back home, but then I saw the opportunities here.”
Castano has noticed others have followed a similar path to his.
“There is a large Latin American community – and I know a lot of the people (in it) have been here for more than 10 years,” he said. “They arrived … (under) different circumstances – and years later, they ended up staying in Kansas City.”
Castano believes it’s a win-win situation when immigrants settle in the area.
“We (immigrants) bring a lot to Kansas City, and Kansas City pays us back,” he said.
Immigrants are expected to continue settling in the area. In 2013, 16.5 percent of the labor force consisted of immigrants, according to the organization Welcome to America. The organization is expecting the amount of immigrant labor in the United States to continue to grow. It also expects the number of immigrants in Kansas City to continue to grow.
“The opportunities are … (here),” Castano said. “You (might) have to start from the bottom …, but you have to start somewhere. And Kansas City not only gives you … opportunities, but its economy and development … (are) perfect to raise a family and just to live here.”
