Lawyer claiming Mexican government is violating drug lord’s human rights

Lawyer Jose Luis Gonzalez Meza, who’s representing imprisoned drug lord Joaquin Guzman Loera (a.k.a., “El Chapo”), recently came to the United States to request support for his client.
Gonzalez Meza claims the Mexican government is violating “El Chapo’s” human rights. During a press conference outside the White House, the attorney stated he had submitted a petition on his client’s behalf to the International Commission of Human Rights and Amnesty International.
“They are analyzing the case,” Gonzalez Meza was quoted by the EFE news agency as saying.
“El Chapo” is being held in solitary confinement in a Mexican prison. According to Gonzalez Meza, he’s not allowed to receive visits from his family.
“As a Mexican, he has the right to go to trial, he has the right to be visited by his family, by his lawyer, by whoever he wants,” Gonzalez Meza stated.
Guzman Loera recently issued a statement claiming he has to do the inmate count every hour each day and every two hours each night. He also stated there’s a dog that barks most of the time and he can’t sleep.
The Mexican government has denied that “El Chapo’s” human rights are being violated. Interior Secretary Miguel Angel Osorio Chong said during a recent press conference that the drug lord is being treated like any other prisoner.
