Tuberculosis también afecta a niños

Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis affects children, too

By Paula Alzate

Some people might think that tuberculosis (TB) is a disease only adults get. But that’s not true.
A serious disease caused by a bacterium, TB affects children worldwide every day. According to the World Health Organization, more than 1 million children suffered from the disease in 2015 and more than 130,000 die each year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 9,582 cases were reported in 2013 in the United States, including 5 percent involving children younger than 15 years old.
Symptoms of TB include coughing, weight loss, fever and night sweats. However, in many cases, the bacteria can live inside someone without showing any symptoms.
The disease can be treated with several medicines for six to nine months.
“If a child stops taking the drugs before completion, the child can become sick again,” according to the CDC. “If (the) drugs are not taken correctly, the bacteria that are still alive may become resistant to those drugs. TB that is resistant to drugs is harder and more expensive to treat, and treatment lasts much longer – up to 18 to 24 months.”
In some countries, the TB vaccine is given to newborns; however, in the United States, it’s only given to some people who may be at risk of getting the disease.
