Debate continues over whether or not to spank children

By Paula Alzate

One parenting topic that has created controversy through the years is spanking.
Many parents believe that spanking is important to teaching children to behave.
“When you have to spank them, you have to do it,” said Kenny Cordero, a parent of two.
Other adults disagree. According to Murray Straus, a sociology professor who’s co-director of the Family Research Laboratory, “Spanking teaches children to use acts of aggression and violence to solve their problems. It only teaches and perpetuates more violence – the very thing our society is so concerned about.”
According to PositiveParenting.com, actions to take before spanking include the following:

*Remaining calm: Take time to think about the situation before taking action.
*Talking: Talking to children will not only help create a trust bond, but also will let them know what’s right and what’s wrong.
*Trying time out: A spot or a method for children to think about what they did wrong not only provides them with time to think about the situation, but also allows the parents to calm down.
*Being strict: Parents can be strict without causing fear in their children. Talking and having clearly stated rules will create a strict, yet trustful environment.
