U.S. airlines receive approval for roundtrip Cuban flights

After more than 50 years of international political tension between the United States and Cuba, six U.S. airlines have received the Department of Transportation’s permission to fly into Cuba.
American, Frontier, JetBlue, Silver Airways, Southwest and Sun Country have received approval for approximately 155 roundtrip flights between the United States and Cuba, according to Scott Mayerowitz and Joan Lowy with the Associated Press. The approval will grant the airlines permission to start flying this fall into nine Cuban cities. Flights will land in Camaguey, Cayo Coco, Cayo Largo, Cienfuegos, Holguin, Manzanillo, Matanzas, Santa Clara and Santiago de Cuba. Havana is being excluded for the time being.
To start, roundtrips to Cuba will fly out of five U.S. cities: Miami; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Chicago; Philadelphia; and Minneapolis. For now, tickets are priced at about $500; however, prices are being determined, as such airlines as Southwest claim the flights can be delivered at a lower cost.
Flights won’t begin until all security processes have been approved at Cuban airports. All the approved airlines have secured the necessary licensing to perform such flights, according to Travel Market Report.
Although tourism travel to Cuba remains restricted, other travel opportunities to the country include family visits and professional meetings, according to Mayerowitz and Lowy.
