Antes y ahora, celebrando 35 años
En el 2001, el condado Jackson en Missouri honró a Clara y Manuel Reyes por sus contribuciones para la comunidad. Al conmemorar su 175º aniversario, el condado compiló una «lista del legado» de los 175 creadores más influyentes del condado Jackson. Los homenajeados que fueron seleccionados «simbolizan el espíritu e iniciativa en cada uno de nosotros».
Estar incluida en la Lista de Legados junto con su esposo Manuel, no fue ni el primero ni el último tributo formal para Clara Reyes por su servicio a la región de Kansas City y la comunidad hispana. La fundadora y copropietaria de el periódico Dos Mundos ha recibido muchos honores durante los 35 años de vida de la publicación semanal que es propiedad de familia.
Sin embargo, todos los premios contradicen el inicio humilde de la empresa editora de Clara: en junio de 1981, ella no tenía manera de saber que estaba tomando parte en un momento histórico en el periodismo impreso regional.
Dos Mundos nació en el sótano de la familia Reyes, la idea genial de una futurista inmigrante, esposa y madre. Clara utilizó la ayuda y el apoyo de su esposo y sus hijos que eran de edad adolescente y pre adolescente, Edward y Diana, y unos pocos amigos para producir la edición inaugural de su periódico quincenal en blanco y negro de gran formato -que ahora es el periódico bilingüe hispano más antiguo en la región de 4 estados que ahora es semanal y a todo color.
La editorial periodística era una búsqueda poco probable para Clara, quien estaba entrenada como dentista en su país natal de México y como agente de bienes raíces después de su matrimonio y mudanza al área de Kansas City. Pero al adaptarse a la vida en un nuevo país y aprender el idioma, Clara se dio cuenta de la necesidad de tener un conducto de información bilingüe y bicultural para los inmigrantes. Ella intentó informar a los recién llegados de habla hispana en su propio lenguaje para manejar tareas necesarias de la vida americana tales como abrir una cuenta de cheques, comprar servicio telefónico o solicitar licencia de manejo.
Ésa ha sido la misión del periódico Dos Mundos por 35 años, y ese es el compromiso para dar servicio al interés público con integridad y respetando los estándares periodísticos más altos que le han dado a Clara y a su premiado periódico tantos aplausos a través de los años.
Entre los honores conferidos a Clara Reyes están el Premio a Mujeres que Hablan En Serio del Kansas City Business Journal , el premio Empresa del Año Propiedad de Mujeres del Departamento de Comercio de Kansas y el premio a Defensora del Año de la Administración de Pequeñas Empresas de EE.UU.
En el 2005, Clara fue seleccionada para dar la conferencia anual Huck Boyd en medios de comunicación comunitarios en la Universidad Kansas State. En el 2011, recibió el premio Ohtli en el Consulado Mexicano en Kansas City por “su papel como mujer empresarial líder y líder comunitario”, y “su genuina dedicación hacia el bienestar, prosperidad y fortalecimiento de las comunidades mexicana e hispanas”.
Los esfuerzos de Clara han sido reconocidos por organizaciones tales como la Cámara Hispana de Comercio, MANA, Sociedad Cultural Azteca, Fundación Mattie Rhodes y muchos otros.
Ella es miembro chárter y cofundadora de la Cámara Hispana de Comercio de Estados Unidos y la Asociación Comercial del Southwest Boulevard. Ella ha encabezado la Coalición de Mujeres Hispanas contra el Cáncer y colaboró en las directivas de organizaciones que incluyen la Universidad Avila, Sistema de Salud St Luke, Salvation Army y la Coalición de Salud.
«Todo lo que he logrado fue gracias a mi familia, a mi equipo y mi comunidad», dijo Reyes. «Tuve un gran apoyo de todos los que creyeron en lo que estábamos haciendo, y quiero agradecer a todos los que me han ayudado a cumplir con lo que he logrado en 35 años».

Part 2, from basement to building

In 2001, Jackson County, Mo. honored Clara and Manuel Reyes for their contributions to the community. Commemorating its 175th anniversary, the county compiled a “Legacy List” of the 175 most influential builders of Jackson County. The honorees who were selected “symbolize the spirit and initiative in every one of us.”
Making the Legacy List with her husband, Manuel was neither the first nor last formal tribute to Clara Reyes for her service to the Kansas City region and the Hispanic community. The founder and co-owner of Dos Mundos newspaper has taken many honors throughout the 35-year life of the family-owned weekly.
But all of the awards belie Clara’s publishing enterprise’s humble beginning; in June 1981, she had no way of knowing that she was taking part in a historic moment in regional print journalism.
Dos Mundos was born in the Reyes’s basement, the brainchild of an immigrant visionary, wife and mother. Clara drew on the help and support of her husband, teenage and pre-teen children, Edward and Diana and a few friends to produce the inaugural edition of her black-and-white biweekly broadsheet – now the oldest Hispanic bilingual newspaper in the four-state region and a full color weekly.
Newspaper publishing was an unlikely pursuit for Clara, who’d trained as a dentist in her native Mexico and as a real estate agent after her marriage and move to the Kansas City area. But in the course of adapting to life in a new country and learning the language, Clara realized the need for a bilingual, bicultural conduit of practical information to immigrants. She sought to educate Spanish-speaking newcomers in their own language on handling such necessary tasks of American life as opening a checking account, buying phone service or applying for a driver’s license.
That’s been the mission of Dos Mundos newspaper for 35 years. And it’s that commitment to serving the public interest with integrity and observing the highest journalistic standards that have earned Clara and her award-winning newspaper so much acclaim over the years.
Among the honors conferred on Clara Reyes are the Kansas City Business Journal’s
Women Who Mean Business award, the Kansas Commerce Department’s Woman-Owned Business of the Year award and the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Advocate of the Year Award.
In 2005, Clara was selected to deliver the annual Huck Boyd lecture in community media at Kansas State University. In 2011, she received the Ohtli Award at the Mexican Consulate in Kansas City for “her role as a leading businesswoman and community leader” and “her genuine dedication to the well-being, prosperity and empowerment of the Mexican and Hispanic communities.”
Clara’s efforts have been recognized by such organizations as the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, MANA, the Azteca Cultural Society, the Mattie Rhodes Foundation and numerous others.
She’s a charter member and co-founder of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Southwest Boulevard Business Association. She’s led the Coalition of Hispanic Women Against Cancer and served on the boards of organizations that include Avila University, St. Luke’s Health System, the Salvation Army and the Health Coalition.
“All this that I accomplished was because of my family, my team and my community,” Reyes said. “I had a lot of support from everyone who believed in what we’re doing, and I want to thank everyone who has helped me accomplish what I have accomplished in 35 years.”
