Kobach making Kansas gubernatorial bid

By Melissa Arroyo
On June 8, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach announced he would run for state governor in 2018.
Accompanied by his wife and five daughters, Kobach announced his campaign to succeed Gov. Sam Brownback at the Thompson Barn in Lenexa, where he outlined “three problems” he promised to focus on if elected: corruption, taxation and illegal immigration.
Notorious for his hardline stance on immigration and authoring the controversial House Bill 1070 in Arizona, Kobach claimed in his speech that the state has made no effort to stop illegal immigration.
“In fact, Kansas is the sanctuary state of the Midwest,” he said. “We are the only state in the five-state area that has done nothing to discourage illegal immigration. That’s going to change if I’m governor.”
According to Kobach, deterring illegal immigration will prevent terrorism and crime, and will help the Kansas economy. His solutions include ending sanctuary cities and counties, denying welfare to undocumented immigrants and discontinuing the in-state tuition program for undocumented college students.
Kobach is well-known for his efforts to deter and investigate voter fraud in a longtime investigation that has produced minimal results, but has drawn criticism for paving the way for voter suppression. He’s also drawn criticism for his involvement in creating House Bill 1070 in Arizona. Critics of the anti-immigrant bill claim that it encouraged racial profiling among law enforcement.
Critics have voiced their concerns about Kobach’s gubernatorial bid, stating that he’s running on a platform of hate and is marginalizing a segment of the population to rally support.
“When (Kobach’s) not using the state airplane to travel to political functions, he’s working with white supremacist hate groups to intimidate minorities and immigrants,” state Sen. Anthony Hensley said. “That is why I have called him the most racist politician in America.”
