Las Vegas, Nev., is recovering from one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern U.S. history.
At press time, there were 59 people reported as dead and more than 520 injured from a shooting Sunday night (Oct. 1) there. Many people expressed their reactions to the tragedy via social media, including some fans at the music festival where the shooting took place.
An Instagram user shared a video showing what was happening inside one of the music festival tents. The user, @rtbleck, commented: “Shots fired! Barely made it out with @breskags. Scariest moment of my life. He just kept firing and firing. Please, God, let everyone be O.K.” In the video, a man is heard saying, “That was an AR (automatic rifle).”
Broadcast producer Rosa Hwang shared a picture of a vacant Las Vegas Strip. Via her social media handle @journorosa, Hwang wrote: “This is the Vegas Strip right now. Never seen it like this. Empty.”
Musician Jason Aldean, whose performance was interrupted by the shooting, posted this message on Twitter: “Over the last 24 hrs, I have gone through lots of emotions… #Stopthehate #PrayForLasVegas.”
For some political figures, social media and the tragedy were used to reignite the debate over gun rights. Democratic U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren tweeted: “Thoughts & prayers are NOT enough. Not when more moms & dads will bury kids this week, & more sons & daughters will grow up without parents.”
Some conservatives accused Democrats of politicizing a tragedy, such as Republican Gov. Matt Bevin, who tweeted: “To all those political opportunists who are seizing on the tragedy in Las Vegas to call for more gun regs …, you can’t regulate evil.”
In addition, social media users began using the hashtag #PrayForVegas to express their feelings about the tragedy. Here are some of their posts:
“What happened in Las Vegas has me stunned. RIP to all those innocent lives that were taken last night #PrayForVegas.”

El tiroteo en Las Vegas atrae reacciones en las redes sociales
Las Vegas, Nev., Se está recuperando de uno de los tiroteos en masa con más víctimas, en la historia moderna de Estados Unidos.
Al cierre de esta edición, se habían reportado 59 personas muertas y más de 520 heridas por un tiroteo el domingo (1 de octubre) por la noche. Muchas personas expresaron sus reacciones ante la tragedia a través de las redes sociales, incluyendo a algunos fans en el festival de música donde tuvo lugar el tiroteo.
Un usuario de Instagram compartió un video mostrando lo que estaba sucediendo dentro de una de las carpas del festival de música. El usuario, @rtbleck, comentó: “¡Dispararon! Apenas logramos escapar @breskags. Este fue el momento en el que he sentido más miedo en toda mi vida. Sólo seguían disparando y disparando. Por favor, Dios, que todo el mundo esté bien “En el video, se puede escuchar a un hombre diciendo,”Eso fue un AR (rifle automático)”.
La productora de noticias Rosa Hwang compartió una foto de la calle principal de Las Vegas, vacía. A través de sus redes sociales bajo el nombre de @jourorosa, Hwang escribió: “Así se ve la calle principal de las Vegas. Nunca la había visto así. Vacía.”
El músico Jason Aldean, cuya presentación fue interrumpida por el tiroteo, publicó este mensaje en Twitter: “Durante las últimas 24 horas, he pasado por muchas emociones … #Stopthehate #PrayForLasVegas.”
Para algunas figuras políticas, las redes sociales y la tragedia fueron utilizados para retomar el debate sobre los derechos de armas. La senadora demócrata de Estados Unidos, Elizabeth Warren, escribió en Twitter: “Los pensamientos y oraciones NO son suficientes. No cuando más madres y papás entierren a sus hijos esta semana y más hijos e hijas crecerán sin padres. “
Algunos conservadores acusaron a los demócratas de politizar la tragedia, como el gobernador republicano Matt Bevin, quien twitteó: “A todos aquellos oportunistas políticos que están aprovechando la tragedia en Las Vegas para pedir cambiar las leyes de las armas … no se puede regular el mal.”
