Street Talk: What is the meaning of Christmas?

By Tere Siqueira

What Christmas means depends on who you ask about it.
Recently, Dos Mundos asked some people what the annual Dec. 25 holiday means to them. Here are their answers:

“I never really thought about what … (it) meant to me before. I know that Jesus wasn’t born … (on the) date that everyone is celebrating, buying gifts, getting together, eating and enjoying (the day). But I think everyone forgets about the real meaning of Christmas…. For me, (it) is a spiritual celebration without gifts. It’s the time of the year to think deeply about the pure love and the surrender of Jesus. It’s about sharing with your family the thoughts about the patience, simplicity and nature of the innocent Jesus.”

“Christmas is a special occasion to get together with family, because I love spending Christmas with the grandparents, uncles, brothers and sons. Everyone gets together – and we always cook a big, traditional meal. We cook bacalao, romeritos, turkey and ponche. It’s also a date to celebrate the birth of baby Jesus and remember his message of love to every human.”

“It’s a time of a lot of love, lights, gifts, a big dinner and to be thankful for everything that we have. But … (it’s especially a time for) being thankful for the moments that we (have) lived. I love this holiday because you get to spend it with your family, giving and receiving gifts.”

“For me, Christmas is a time to think about everything that happened in the year. All the personal stuff that I lived – the good and the bad. It’s about sharing moments and getting together with my family. Being thankful about the stuff that I have. I love to share this moment with my family and enjoy the traditional food.”
– Gabriel Alcantara –

“For me, Christmas … (is) the best time of the year. Not only because of the gifts, the weather and the beautiful decorations, but (also) because (of) the environment of happiness, illusion, friendship and all the love in the family. Because even though it’s a cliché, this is a beautiful time to be with all the people that we love. It’s a chance to get better, give new or second chances – and overall, about being happy.”
