The Latino community in the United States is becoming more than a minority.
The community has not only developed a strong voice among minority groups, but also has become a powerful influence on U.S. society overall. And that strength is being noticed and appreciated by other communities that are reaching out to us. Dani Dayan, the head of the Consulate General of Israel in New York, recently acknowledged this when he spoke with The Jerusalem Post.
“Latino voices are carrying greater weight, leaders from their communities are rising to positions of influence at all levels at an increasing frequency,” Dayan said.
The Israeli consulate is determined to build bridges with America’s Hispanic community. The consulate believes that, considering the Latino growth in the United States, it’s in the consulate’s best interests to get Latinos involved and familiarized with the Jewish state.
Dayan believes that, as America’s demographic shifts, Latinos will have even greater potential to support the Jewish state. As America’s demographic shifts, so does the country’s strategies, he explained to The Post.
“This, in turn, means we have to recognize some areas as strategically important – and in the coming years, this includes the Hispanic communities,” Dayan said. “We see their rise, how they are going to be the demographic plurality in the U.S. in the future.”
The consul-general also stated that he believes that “in order for the Latino community to fulfill its true potential of leadership in this country, they have to be involved in every aspect of American political life, including, for instance, foreign relations – and not only with Latin America, but in the world.”
Dayan isn’t the only representative of Israel reaching out to the Hispanic community. Israel advocacy groups such as StandWithUs have made independent efforts to create new fellowship programs aimed at Latino churches and students.
Overall, Israel continues to receive support from most Americans. However, based on the hostility shown toward the Jewish state by the Trump administration, other Jewish organizations are worried about their future.
We should be prepared to use our strong, collective voice to speak up for them.
