Street Talk: Should teachers carry guns at school?

Commentary and Interviews by Eulogio JP

School shootings are something America must discuss and find a way to stop.
Why are they happening? What can we do about them? On my quest to find answers to those questions, I asked a few teachers I know for their thoughts on a recommendation that teachers carry guns at school. Here are their answers (Note: Because of the subject matter, every teacher has asked to remain anonymous):

Teacher No. 1:
“I do not feel like it is a safe or (an) effective solution to arm teachers. I wholeheartedly agree that action must be taken to address the school shooting crisis in this country.
“I became a teacher because I was passionate about mentoring students. My main objection to arming teachers is that it has been presented as a one-and-done solution. This idea is action without planning and does not take into account district budgeting, training for teachers and a number of other implementation issues.
“Like most things in education, the solution has been to place the responsibility of student safety solely on the teachers. There is not a teacher I know who wouldn’t do anything to make sure their students are safe, but teachers should not be the first and only line of defense. It is going to take a multifaceted comprehensive approach to guarantee student safety. There needs to be ongoing problem-solving that involves some uncomfortable conversations amongst people who disagree. There should be only one resounding focus driving these conversations – and that is to ensure that every classroom across America is a guaranteed place of safety and learning. “

Teacher No. 2:
“I believe that arming teachers is not the solution to end the violence that is terrorizing our schools. Teachers are not prepared to deal with the task of responding (to) fire with fire, exposing the lives of their students in the attempt of neutralizing a menace. This task requires years of training and experience – and, of course, cannot be performed by somebody that wasn’t prepared accordingly.
“Teachers need more support – not to stop a shooting, but to prevent it by creating more connections with students and the communities they belong to. Students need to feel loved and cared about. And in this way, less acts of violence will occur not only in schools, but all around in … American society.”

Teacher No. 3:
“I feel strongly against teachers carrying guns in school for many different reasons. First, I think this draws attention away from the bigger issue of gun control. Secondly, as a teacher, I want to focus on teaching students. I want to collaborate with co-teachers and partner with parents. I do not want to be responsible for a gun and the possibility of using it.
“At the same time, I do not want to teach in a building where anyone has a gun, unless specifically trained (as in a police officer). I appreciate my district for being diligent about safety training and providing us with tools (such as Barracudas for the doors) to help keep us and our students safe. I would feel less safe with armed teachers in the school building!”

Teacher No. 4:
“It’s sad that this is something that needs commenting on in the first place. That being said, I am terrified at this prospect and very (much) against teachers carrying guns.
“As teachers we are lovers, not fighters. To ask someone … (in) this capacity to carry a weapon that they may someday have to use against a child that they once thought of as their own is incomprehensible.
“I understand that there is a chance that this could save lives. I am not ignorant to that fact. And as a teacher, it is my job to protect my students at any cost. And I would. This is also a fact. On the flip side, I think about the possibility of a student getting their hands on this weapon – one that could be ‘readily available’ to them in the school itself. I think about how few students it would take to ambush the teacher carrying (it) and how quickly the situation could turn ugly. I think about the chances this teacher carrying (it) could get to the shooter in question in a timely enough matter to end the situation. I think about how the teacher who becomes the carrier gets determined. Do the other teachers get a say? This is just a start to my fears.
“All of these ‘what ifs’ amount to a huge ‘no’ in my brain. I believe that the small chance that this could do good comes with an even larger chance that it could be detrimental. Again, … we are lovers, not fighters.”
