When Virginia Oropeza came to the Kansas City area from Mexico, she never thought she would fall in love and stay.
Invited by Grupo Azteca to paint a mural, Oropeza came to the area in 1998. Even after 20 years, she remembers that moment as one precious memory.
“They first went to my hometown (Tanganzicuaro, Michoacan) and then I came here,” Oropeza recalled. “I can say it was amazing. It … (was) a good experience and (a time of) learning. I always say to people that I came to paint a mural and then I painted my life.”
Since settling in the area, Oropeza has become involved in multiple church activities. She started working with Our Lady of Unity Church because she wanted to find something to do and help the community.
“I first started looking for activities in the church,” Oropeza said. “Then, I started coordinating Our Lady of Guadalupe festivities.”
Now, Oropeza coordinates Las Posadas and Our Lady of Guadalupe activities. She also coordinates Holy Week activities.
“I enjoy … (being) the coordinator and organizer,” she said. “Also, I have a group that helps people to get closer to the church. The group is called Piedad Popular and it helps me to bring people closer to God.”
Oropeza believes everything in life has been made possible through support from her husband and children, and the community.
“I feel very blessed,” she said. “I have … support from my family and other community members. I do everything thinking … (of) serving God and the community.”
For Oropeza, one of the things in her work that she enjoys the most is seeing people smiling and happy.
“My parents always taught me to think … (about) others,” she said. “I always think of my family, my community – and I work on … things with all my heart and love.”
Oropeza believes God has put her in a spot to help others. In honor of March as Women’s History Month, she encourages other women in the community to be helpful to their loved ones.
“Take care of your family,” Oropeza said. “Love them and take care of all of them. Be thankful for the things that God gives us every day. We need to start to appreciate the little things.”

Oropeza inspirada por su fe para servir
Cuando Virginia Oropeza llegó a la zona de Kansas City desde México, nunca pensó que se enamoraría y se quedaría.
Invitada por Grupo Azteca para pintar un mural, Oropeza llegó a la zona en 1998. Incluso después de 20 años, recuerda ese momento como una memoria preciada.
“Primero fueron a mi ciudad natal (Tanganzicuaro, Michoacán) y luego vine aquí”, recordó Oropeza. “Puedo decir que fue increíble. Fue una buena experiencia y tiempo de aprendizaje. Siempre le digo a la gente que vine a pintar un mural y luego pinté mi vida”.
Desde que se estableció en el área, Oropeza se ha involucrado en múltiples actividades de la iglesia. Comenzó a trabajar con la iglesia Our Lady of Unity porque quería encontrar algo para ayudar a la comunidad.
“Primero comencé a buscar actividades en la iglesia”, dijo Oropeza. “Entonces, comencé a coordinar las festividades de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe”.
Ahora, Oropeza coordina las actividades de Las Posadas y Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. También coordina las actividades de Semana Santa.
“Me gusta … ser la coordinadora y organizadora”, dijo. “Además, tengo un grupo que ayuda a las personas a acercarse a la iglesia. El grupo se llama Piedad Popular y me ayuda a acercar a las personas a Dios “.
Oropeza cree que todo en la vida ha sido posible gracias al apoyo de su esposo e hijos y de la comunidad.
“Me siento muy bendecida”, dijo. “Tengo … el apoyo de mi familia y otros miembros de la comunidad. Hago todo pensando … en servir a Dios y a la comunidad “.
Para Oropeza, una de las cosas en su trabajo que más disfruta es ver gente sonriente y feliz.
“Mis padres siempre me enseñaron a pensar … sobre otros”, dijo. “Siempre pienso en mi familia, mi comunidad, y trabajo en … cosas con todo mi corazón y amor”.
Oropeza cree que Dios la ha puesto en un lugar para ayudar a otros. En honor a marzo como el Mes de la Historia de la Mujer, ella alienta a otras mujeres de la comunidad a ayudar a sus seres queridos.
“Cuida a tu familia”, dijo Oropeza. “Ámalos y cuídalos a todos. Agradece las cosas que Dios nos da todos los días. Tenemos que empezar a apreciar las cosas pequeñas “.
