President Trump’s decision to send National Guard troops to America’s southern border isn’t being well-received in Mexico.
On April 4, Trump signed a memorandum approving the deployment of National Guard troops, citing undocumented immigration traffic, narcotics traffic and “dangerous gang activity” as the reasons for doing so. Multiple news agencies have confirmed that the deployment of troops to border spots in Texas and Arizona has begun.
According to Reuters, Trump plans to have the National Guard watch the southern border until his proposed border wall is built. Congress hasn’t approved the total funding of the wall, and Mexico has rejected the idea of paying for a wall that divides the United States and Mexico.
In response, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto (Peña Nieto in Spanish) told Trump that “nothing and no one stands above the dignity of Mexico.” Pena Nieto’s response was posted in a video on his Twitter account. Various mass media outlets in Mexico also disseminated the message.
“President Trump, if you wish to reach agreements with Mexico, we stand ready, as we have proved until now, always willing to engage in a dialogue, acting in earnestness, in good faith and in a constructive spirit,” Pena Nieto said. “If your recent statements are the result of frustration due to domestic policy issues, to your laws or to your Congress, it is to them that you should turn to, not to Mexicans. We will not allow negative rhetoric to define our actions. We will only act in the best interest of Mexicans.”
Mexicans such as Patricia Gonzalez applauded Pena Nieto’s message.
“I’m not a big fan of Pena Nieto. I don’t even like him. But I have to say that his message was powerful, strong and that he finally spoke for all the Mexican people,” said Gonzalez, a Mexico City resident. “As he said, Mexico is open to … (negotiating and discussing) possible solutions. It is unfair that, just because Mr. Trump promised a wall (while campaigning for president) and promised several things that he can’t … (accomplish), he uses Mexico as a tool to discharge his frustration.”
“Mexico has been cooperative and is a good neighbor,” Gonzalez added. “I’m hoping Mr. Trump can see it and (that he) stops all the outrageous things that he is doing.”

El Presidente mexicano responde a Trump
La decisión del presidente Trump de enviar tropas de la Guardia Nacional a la frontera sur de Estados Unidos no está siendo bien recibida en México.
El 4 de abril, Trump firmó un memorando que aprueba el despliegue de las tropas de la Guardia Nacional, citando el tráfico de inmigrantes indocumentados, el tráfico de narcóticos y la “peligrosa actividad de pandillas” como las razones para hacerlo. Múltiples medios de comunicación han confirmado que el despliegue de tropas en puntos fronterizos en Texas y Arizona ha comenzado.
Según Reuters, Trump planea que la Guardia Nacional vigile la frontera sur hasta que se construya el muro fronterizo propuesto. El Congreso no ha aprobado la financiación total del muro y México ha rechazado la idea de pagar por un muro que divide a Estados Unidos y México.
En respuesta, el presidente mexicano Enrique Peña Nieto le dijo a Trump que “nada ni nadie está por encima de la dignidad de México”. La respuesta de Peña Nieto fue publicada en un video en su cuenta de Twitter. Varios medios de comunicación masiva en México también difundieron el mensaje.
“Presidente Trump, si desea llegar a acuerdos con México, estamos listos, como lo hemos demostrado hasta ahora. Siempre dispuestos a entablar un diálogo, actuar con seriedad, de buena fe y con un espíritu constructivo”, dijo Peña Nieto. “Si sus declaraciones recientes son el resultado de la frustración debido a problemas de política interna, a sus leyes o a su Congreso, es a ellos a quienes deben recurrir, no a los mexicanos. No permitiremos que la retórica negativa defina nuestras acciones. Sólo actuaremos en el mejor interés de los mexicanos”.
Mexicanos como Patricia González aplaudieron el mensaje de Peña Nieto.
“No soy una gran admiradora de Peña Nieto. Ni siquiera me gusta. Pero debo decir que su mensaje fue poderoso, fuerte y que finalmente habló por todos los mexicanos”, dijo González, una residente de Ciudad de México. “Como dijo, México está abierto a … (negociar y discutir) posibles soluciones. Es injusto que, sólo porque el Sr. Trump prometió un muro (mientras hizo campaña para ser presidente) y prometió varias cosas que él no puede… (lograr), usa a México como una herramienta para descargar su frustración”.
“México ha sido cooperativo y es un buen vecino”, agregó González. “Espero que el Sr. Trump pueda verlo y (que) detenga todas las cosas escandalosas que está haciendo”.
