A new movie is out on DVD and streaming video that might make viewers see the taco business in a new, humorous way.
The movie is “Taco Shop.” Rated PG-13, the Joaquin Perea-directed comedy depicts the rivalry that ensues when a taco truck sets up across the street from a taco shop and starts jeopardizing the shop’s business. Cast members include Veronica Diaz Carranza and Luis Victor Jimenez.
During a recent interview, Diaz Carranza and Jimenez discussed the story and their characters in the movie.
Dos Mundos: Tell us a little bit about the “Taco Shop” story.
Luis Victor Jimenez: It is not too complicated. We (have) got two taco-making entities. One is a taco truck and the other one is a taco shop. The taco truck moves across the street from the taco shop and starts stealing business. That eventually escalates into a taco war.
DM: What was your favorite part about the film?
Veronica Diaz Carranza: My favorite part was being able to work with the crew and cast – and being able to work with so many comics…. I feel that made the experience so much fun, just hilarious. It is such a great work environment (to) be able to play.
LVJ: Yeah, working with a lot of improvisers and comedians was really fun for me. Every day was just nothing but smiles, so it was a lot of fun.
DM: Tell … (us) about your roles.
LVJ: I play Mighty Mac. He is the best friend and love interest of someone in the film. It was fun to play. I brought a lot of me to it. I brought a lot of my own humor to the table. The director and the writers were very linear as far as me playing with the lines and sort … (having) fun with … (whomever) I was acting. So it was a very fun character to play.
VDC: Susie is a strong woman who is very … (focused on) her education. She is intelligent, as well as hard-working. She gets thrown into this world … (that) she ends up handling.
DM: How do your characters resemble you in real life?
VDC: Oh, my God! She is so me. I mean, there … (are) parts I’m sure I relate to…. The value … (she places on) education, that is huge for me. (So are) being strong and fighting for what you want.
DM: How did you guys get your … (parts) in the movie?
VDC: Casting. I went in and read for it, and they thought I was amazing (laughs). I’m kidding.
LVJ: Same with me. I went and read (three times) – and after the third time, they called me and they asked if I wanted to do it. And I was, (like), “Yeah.”
DM: How was (it) working with each other in this film?
VDC: It was fun, great.
LVJ: It was fun. It was a good time.
DM: Where was this filmed and how long did it take?
VDC: We filmed … (in) Long Beach, (Calif.), and it took four weeks to shoot.
DM: What can the audience learn from this movie?
LVJ: Don’t give up on fighting for your dreams, if you have any.
VDC: Don’t mess with someone’s food or business (laughs).
DM: Why do people need to go out and buy this DVD?
VDC: So people can watch it over and over again. Supporting the film is very good.
LVJ: Yes, plus you are not supporting just the film; you are supporting Latinos all the way. That is pretty unique.

Dos Mundos: ¿Cuéntanos un poco sobre la historia de “Taco Shop”.
Luis Victor Jiménez: No es demasiado complicado. Tenemos dos lugares de elaboración de tacos. Uno es un camión de tacos y el otro es una tienda de tacos. El camión de tacos está cruzando la calle de la tienda de tacos y comienza a robar el negocio. Eso finalmente se convierte en una guerra de tacos.
DM: ¿Cuál fue tu parte favorita de la película?
Verónica Díaz Carranza: Mi parte favorita fue poder trabajar con el equipo, el elenco y con tantos cómicos … Creo que eso hizo que la experiencia fuera muy divertida, simplemente hilarante. Es un gran ambiente de trabajo para poder trabajar.
LVJ: Sí, trabajar con muchos improvisadores y comediantes fue realmente divertido para mí. Todos los días no eran más que sonrisas, así que fue muy divertido.
DM: Cuéntennos … sobre sus personajes.
LVJ: Interpretó a Mighty Mac, es el mejor amigo y el interés amoroso de alguien en la película. Fue divertido interpretarlo. Le puse mucho de mi parte al personae y traje mucho de mi propio humor a la mesa. El director y los guionistas fueron muy lineales en cuanto a mí, jugando con las líneas y divirtiéndome con … quien sea que estaba actuando. Por lo que fue un personaje muy divertido de interpretar.
VDC: Susie es una mujer fuerte que está muy centrada en su educación. Es inteligente, además de trabajadora y se ve envuelta en este mundo que termina dirigiendo.
DM: ¿Cómo se parecen a sus personajes en la vida real?
VDC: ¡Oh, Dios mío! Pues ella es tan yo. Quiero decir, hay partes con las que estoy segura que me identifico. El valor que pone en la educación, eso es muy importante para mí. También lo es ser fuerte y luchar por lo que quieres.
DM: ¿Cómo consiguieron sus personajes en la película?
VDC: Fui al casting. Entré y leí, y pensaron que era increíble (risas). Estoy bromeando.
LVJ: Igual conmigo. Fui y leí (tres veces), y después de la tercera vez, me llamaron y me preguntaron si quería hacerlo. Y yo estaba, (como), “Sí”.
DM: ¿Cómo fue el trabajar el uno con el otro en esta película?
VDC: Fue divertido, genial.
LVJ: Fue divertido. Fue un hermoso momento.
DM: ¿Dónde se filmó esto y cuánto tiempo tomó?
VDC: Filmamos en Long Beach, (California), y tardamos cuatro semanas en filmar.
DM: ¿Qué puede aprender el público de esta película?
LVJ: No te rindas lucha por tus sueños, si es que tienes alguno.
VDC: No te metas con la comida o el negocio de alguien (risas).
DM: ¿Por qué la gente necesita salir y comprar este DVD?
VDC: Para que la gente pueda verlo una y otra vez. Apoyar la película es muy bueno.
LVJ: Sí, además, no estás apoyando sólo la película; estás apoyando a los latinos al mismo tiempo. Eso es bastante único.
