Dra. Nancy Álarez: Talk to your children about sex

More and more parents are aware of the need to sexually educate their children. You should know that if you do not sexually educate your children, they will be “educated” in other places. The point is whether this education will be good or bad. If they watch television or if they enter the Internet, they will surely receive an accumulation of anti-values, misinformation and bad information regarding sexuality.

If they speak and understand English, the misinformation will be even greater since most of the talk shows on American television are very strong and broadcast at any time. The same can be said about the movies and the awful soap operas. Although fines have recently been imposed on several chains and personalities in the United States, only the sexual content has been taken into account, forgetting the aggression that is much more damaging.

Starting from the fact that sex education is something wider than sexual information, including photos and video. However, for many parents, sex education is just sexual information. That is, they are pleased to explain the process of menstruation, what the vulva is, how the sperm enters the vagina, etc. The child can find that information very easily in any book. It’s simple sexual information.

Sex education is something much broader and even involves the concept of femininity and masculinity. For example, when we tell children ‘that men do not cry’ or ask them ‘how many girlfriends do they have’, we are educating them sexually.

For a long time, it was believed that sexual education should serve to control the sexual behavior of young people (a vestige of the negative attitude towards everything related to sexuality). Today we know that this does not work. Many parents will believe that educating sexually is telling their daughters ‘do not come back home if they get pregnant.’ With this, I do not mean that I am in favor of teenage pregnancy. Simply, that is not the way to avoid it, because with that phrase we encourage it. If we want to avoid teenage pregnancy, we must maintain excellent communication with them. Let’s not forget that only the Virgin Mary got pregnant without having sex.

We must educate sexually and speak freely about the subject in an atmosphere of affection, respect, and good communication. Threats and insults are useless.

The child who does not receive love, care and affection will not succeed in human relations and certainly not in that kind of human relationship that is sexual.

Every father and mother has the obligation to educate themselves sexually in order to educate their children in a comprehensive way. Children and adolescents should not live in this century of HIV, genital herpes, human papillomavirus and unwanted pregnancies (especially among Latin adolescents), without being sexually educated. It is a responsibility as parents that we can not avoid.
