Our Sons and Daughters
If it is one, ten thousand
or fifteen hundred who are lost,
the pain is the same,
the indignation even greater.
There are no lullabies
to murmur at night,
the beds are vacant.
No one to bundle up on cold afternoons,
the houses are incomplete.
There is no fire in the hearth.
A generation grieving.
No bodies to embrace.
My son, I perceive you through the dark.
My daughter, malevolent claws constrain you.
How do I reach your little hands?
How do I quench your thirst?
How do I find your scent?
How do I hear your sweet voice?
Who will calm your beautiful soul?
Is there anything for you to eat?
Who will say your name with tenderness?
Who will pray for you with love?
And, during stormy nights,
My son, my daughter,
how will you know that I am still by your side?
