Welcome tourists! In this edition, we will talk about one of the main tourist destinations of our neighboring country Mexico and that was also called the best city in the world by the prestigious magazines Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler. We are talking about San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The city is located in the state of Guanajuato and it was one of the most important cities in the proclamation of the Mexican Independence.
It has a population of fewer than 100 thousand citizens and was founded in 1542 by the Franciscan monk Fray Juan de San Miguel who called it San Miguel el Grande (The big San Miguel). After the war of Independence, it was proclaimed city and changed its name to San Miguel of Allende in honor of the hero of the nation Ignacio Allende who gave his life for the freedom of his people and who was also a native of this city.
In 2008 it was named Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, the distinction was granted due to its cultural and architectural contribution to the Mexican Baroque and to the importance in the fight for Mexican Independence. Travel + Leisure named it the best city in the world due to its kindness, gastronomy, quality of service, mobility, shopping experience and above all for its cultural contribution, architectural beauty and its places of entertainment.
Unfortunately, there is no airport in this city, so we advise you to take a direct flight to Mexico City for about $300 and then take a bus with a duration of approximately 4 hours paying $40 for a round trip. The accommodation in a 3-star hotel has an average price of $60 per night and in a hostel for $20. Although you can also find luxury boutique hotels, with an average price of $240 per night. When it comes to San Miguel de Allende the best option is to walk and you won’t need a vehicle since everything is relatively close. You can also take some tram tours like the one called El Pipila where you will listen to several legends of the city and make stops in the most emblematic places of the city, the tour lasts approximately 1 hour and a half and has a price of $4. If you want to try some of the typical dishes then you should not miss the enchiladas mineras that are chicken tacos bathed in a typical sauce of the city, Fiambre San Miguel de Allende, which is a mixture of meat and vegetables bathed in a vinaigrette sauce. I’ll drink a fresh beet juice that is the juice of a sweet red intense vegetable and as a dessert a small dish of cajeta, a burnt milk candy that is very famous throughout Mexico.
Now that we know a bit about how to get there and the main expenses of the trip, here I describe some of the many places to visit in such a beautiful city:
San Miguel Arcángel Parrish is a luxurious church of Gothic style that has inspired in the medieval European cathedrals. It was built in 1649 but it collapsed some 50 years later due to a great deterioration and it was rebuilt again in 1710 with an appearance to the mere baroque style, as well as most of the town. But by 1890 changes were made again in it to take on the appearance it currently has. It’s surrounded by its beautiful central garden, which has a beautiful kiosk with Indian laurels and as night falls you can find a large number of couples dancing the traditional danzón. You can enjoy the whole historic downtown of the city as you will find museums, other important Catholic churches and some monuments honoring the Mexican Independence.
Cañada de la Virgen is an archaeological site that is located 10 miles from the city. The construction of these pyramids and other architectural structures is attributed to the Toltec-Chichimec indigenous groups founded between 300 B.C. and was occupied until close to 900 A.D. You will be able to know 3 of its 5 bases: the Houses of the Thirteen Heavens, the Longest Night and the Wind. Guided tours and transportation have a price of $10 per person.
The gruta is a hot springs spa that exceeds 104 Fahrenheit, which has open and roofed pools and a cave where you can relax in total silence while enjoying the sound of water gushing from the ground. The place has exclusive spaces for children and a restaurant, the admission fee is $8.
Callejoneadas, as we described in the Guanajuato piece, you can also enjoy beautiful walks through the alleys of the city with live music performed by musical groups called estudiantinas You will also listen to musical stories of the places you are going through and romantic songs dedicated to women. The price per person is $8 for a journey of approximately 1 hour.
The main currency is the Mexican peso and cards are not accepted everywhere, so I advise you to change some dollars before starting your tour of the city. Without more, for the moment I say goodbye and wish you to have an excellent adventure and a good trip.

Conoce San Miguel de Allende
Bienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de uno de los principales destinos turísticos de nuestro país vecino México y que además fue llamada la mejor ciudad del mundo por las prestigiosas revistas Travel + Leisure y Condé Nast Traveler, nos referimos a San Miguel de Allende, México. Ciudad que se encuentra en el estado de Guanajuato y que fue una de las ciudades más importantes en la proclamación de la Independencia del pueblo mexicano.
Cuenta con una población menor a los 100 mil habitantes y fue fundada en el año 1542 por el monje franciscano Fray Juan de San Miguel quien la llamó San Miguel el Grande, luego de la Guerra de Independencia fue proclamada ciudad y cambió su nombre a San Miguel de Allende en honor al héroe de la nación Ignacio Allende quien dio su vida por la libertad de su pueblo y que además era oriundo de esta ciudad.
En 2008 fue nombrada Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, la distinción se le otorgó debido a su aporte cultural y arquitectónico al barroco mexicano y a la importancia en la lucha de Independencia de México. Travel + Leisure la nombró la mejor ciudad del mundo debido a su amabilidad, gastronomía, calidad de servicio, movilidad, experiencia en compras y sobretodo por su aportación cultural, belleza arquitectónica y sus lugares de diversión.
Desgraciadamente no existe un aeropuerto en esta ciudad, por lo que te recomendamos tu viaje redondo directo a Ciudad de México por unos $300 y de ahí tomar un camión con una duración de aproximadamente 4 horas por trayecto y un costo de $40 ida y vuelta. El hospedaje en un hotel 3 estrellas se encuentra en un promedio de $60 la noche y en un hostal por $20, aunque también existen lujosos hoteles boutique si de gozar se trata, tienen un costo promedio de $240 por noche. Al hablar de San Miguel de Allende sin duda es hablar de caminar, recorrer cada uno de sus rincones es una maravilla visual, además al ser una pequeña ciudad podrás hacerlo sin necesidad de un vehículo ya que todo se encuentra relativamente cercano, o bien puedes tomar algún tour como el tranvía llamado El pípila que te irá contando varias leyendas de la ciudad además de hacer paradas en los lugares más emblemáticos de la ciudad, el recorrido dura aproximadamente 1 hora y media y tiene un costo de $4. Si deseas probar algunos de los platillos típicos entonces no debes perderte de las enchiladas mineras que son tacos de pollo bañados en una salsa típica de la ciudad, Fiambre San Miguel de Allende que es una mezcla de carnes con vegetales bañados con una salsa de vinagreta. Como bebida un fresco jugo de betabel que es el zumo de una verdura dulce de color rojo intenso y como postre un pequeño plato de cajeta, un dulce de leche quemada que es muy famoso por todo México.
Ahora que ya conocemos un poco del cómo llegar y de los principales gastos del viaje, aquí te describo algunos de los muchos sitios por conocer en tan hermosa ciudad:
Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, es una lujosa iglesia de estilo gótico que tiene inspiración en las catedrales europeas medievales, fue construida en 1649 pero se derrumbó unos 50 años después por un gran deterioro, fue reconstruida nuevamente para 1710 con una apariencia al mero estilo barroco, así como la mayor parte del pueblo, pero para 1890 aproximadamente se hizo nuevamente cambios en ella para tomar la apariencia que tiene actualmente. La envuelve su bello jardín central, el cual cuenta con un hermoso kiosco rodeado de laureles de la India y al caer las noches junto a él podrás disfrutar de gran cantidad de parejas contagiadas por el danzón a las que te les puedes unir si así lo deseas. Podrás disfrutar de todo el centro histórico de la ciudad ya que se encontrará a todo tu alrededor, sus museos, sus otras iglesias católicas importantes y algunos de sus monumentos referentes a la Independencia de México.
Cañada de la Virgen, es un sitio arqueológico que está localizado a 10 millas de la ciudad, la construcción de estas pirámides y otras estructuras arquitectónicas es atribuida a los grupos indígenas toltecas-chichimecas que hicieron su fundación entre el año 300 d.c y fue ocupada hasta cercano el año 900 d.c.; podrás conocer 3 de sus 5 basamentos; las Casas de los Trece Cielos, la Noche más Larga y la del Viento. Los recorridos guiados y con transportación tienen un costo de $10 por persona.
La gruta, un balneario de aguas termales que superan los 104 fahrenheit, el cual cuenta con albercas abiertas y techadas además de un laberinto en forma de gruta donde puedes relajarte en total silencio mientras disfrutas del sonido del agua brotando de la tierra. El lugar cuenta con espacios exclusivos para niños y de un restaurante, el costo de entrada es de $8.
Callejoneadas, así como lo describimos en el artículo de Guanajuato, aquí también podrás disfrutar de bellos recorridos por los callejones de la ciudad con música en vivo impartida por grupos musicales de estudiantinas, así como historias cantadas de los sitios por los que vas pasando y románticas canciones dedicadas a las mujeres. Los costos por persona suelen ser de $8 por un recorrido de 1 hora aproximadamente.
La moneda principal es el peso mexicano y no en todos los lugares se aceptan tarjetas, por lo que te recomiendo te anticipes a cambiar algunos dólares antes de empezar tus recorridos por la ciudad. Sin más por el momento me despido deseándote un excelente aventura, saludos y buen viaje.
