Theology specialist shares insights on Our Lady of Guadalupe holiday

Interview by Tere Siqueira

Dos Mundos supports observing the Our Lady of Guadalupe holiday, celebrated annually on Dec. 12. As a show of that support, the newspaper presents the transcript of a recent interview with theology specialist David Vegue.
Vegue is a professor of humanities at Anahuac Mayab University in Mexico. A native Spaniard, he studied philosophy, has a master’s degree in theology and holds a Ph.D. in education. For the past 18 years, he has lived in Mexico, where he has gained knowledge about this celebration.

Dos Mundos: Why do you think that the Lady of Guadalupe is so important for the Hispanic community?
David Vegue: The Lady of Guadalupe means the beginning of the Christian faith with America’s indigenous population. The document that reports the appearances of the Virgin of Guadalupe is known as “Nikan Mopoua.” The text was written by Anton Valeriano, the indigenous peace judge from Tenochtitlan. “Nikan Mopoua” was classified as America’s Gospel. It marks the beginning and continuity of the Christian faith in America. In conclusion, Guadalupe is the heart of Christian spirituality in America.
It became a really important symbol for the nation. The first president of Mexico changed his name to Guadalupe. She was the image … (on) the independence flag, her image was present in the first Mexican Congress (of the Union). Guadalupe’s day is the only religious celebration respected in the whole country.
DM: Why people have always tried to discredit the truth … (about) Guadalupe’s appearance?
DV: There always are two versions. However, scientific (people), historians and religious people have offered evidence that proves the strong spiritual foundation of the appearance. For more than 15 years, I’ve researched strongly … (into) the topic and I can’t find a serious argument that proves the anti-apparitionist theory of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
There are … researchers and scientific people that state that the story was fiction. They claim it was created by the historians, but they don’t offer clear facts. Even though there are many … (pieces of evidence) about the appearance, people are always … (skeptical) about religious events. Other historic events are believed with much less evidence.
DM: What’s the relationship between the original Spanish Virgin of Guadalupe and the Mexican one?
DV: In Extremadura, Spain, a breeder found an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. They built a temple where they started to honor her. Before (the Spanish began) coming to (colonize) America, the Spanish Catholic missionaries used to go over there to sanctify their missions. …
The sanctuary has a big importance. In Mexico, the name Guadalupe, which has an Arabic background, was first revealed by the Virgin to Juan Bernardino, Juan Diego’s ill uncle. You can find the Arabic word Guadalupe in “Nikan Mopoua,” which means that it was the same Virgin. However, she appeared with different ethnic traits in Mexico than the ones she … (appeared with) in Europe. Whenever Mary makes an appearance, she portrays the racial characteristics of the area, which means she’s the mother of everyone.
DM: Why (is) Guadalupe … one of the most famous figures of the Virgin Mary?
DV: Guadalupe was the answer from the sky to the cultural shock and the need of reassurance from the indigenous community. The indigenous felt (threatened by) foreigners in their own land. They were stripped from their lands, religion and customs. As a result, they used to … (suffer from) depression and commit suicide. That’s why Guadalupe came – (to serve) as a bridge between both cultures.
The Virgin’s tilma represents an indigenous codex. The image is full of symbols. The angel is San Diego, with the colors that were used for the Mexican flag (also displayed). She has flowers that symbolize paradise. The four-petal flower is known as “Nahui Olin” … (and it symbolizes) the four cardinal points. She’s dancing as the indigenous did.
She (also) has more than 40 stars that represent the stars from her appearance. … She has three figures reflecting in her eyes.
The tilma is the equivalent of the Shroud of Turin. The research found that (it) is made from a cactus fiber that only lasts 20 years, but the (Virgin’s) tilma has lasted for more than 500 years. It’s a physical miracle.
