The names of six Catholic priests and brothers with connections to Rockhurst High School and Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri, appeared on a list of Jesuits with “credible accusations” of sexually abusing minors.
On Dec. 7, a list issued by the Jesuits’ U.S. Central and Southern Province included allegations against 42 former and current members of the province. It was compiled and released after an internal review of personnel files.
The six with ties to Rockhurst were described as Jesuits who are no longer in the ministry. Five were assigned to Rockhurst High School at some point in their careers, including a former principal. The sixth man was assigned to Rockhurst University and St. Francis Xavier Parish.
The six accused were Francis J. Kegel; Dennis P. Kirchoff; Philip D. Kraus; Chester E. Gaiter; Paul C. Pilgram, the Rockhurst High School principal from 1976 to 1980; and Burton J. Fraser.
Rockhurst High School said in a written statement the last year any of the five priests had served there was 1984, as was reported by The Kansas City Star. The statement also said the high school had forwarded three reports of alleged misconduct to the province.
Rockhurst University also released a statement expressing support for the decision to release the list.
“We believe transparency is the best way to rebuild damaged trust,” the statement said. “We offer prayers of support for all who have suffered as a result of sexual abuse by members of the clergy.”
