Border Patrol agents fire tear gas into Mexico

By Chara

For the second time in recent weeks, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers reportedly fired tear gas and pepper spray into a crowd of Central American immigrants in Mexico.
Media outlets reported the incident began when about 150 immigrants tried to cross into the United States from Tijuana, the temporary home to thousands of Central American migrants who are seeking asylum in the United States. On a second attempt, they began passing children over the razor wire along the border fence to get them across.
CBP stated that the gas, pepper spray and smoke were aimed at people throwing rocks from the Mexican side of the border.
“Both smoke and minimal countermeasures were deployed,” the agency said in a statement. “Agents deployed smoke, pepper spray and CS gas (tear gas) to a position upwind of the rock throwers and south of the border fence.”
Some U.S. officials called the immigrants a violent mob and said the agents were responding with the minimum force necessary to defend themselves and the border, and to restore order.
However, Reuters reported that a witness said the immigrants never threw rocks at the U.S. agents and that an immigrant was hit in the head by a tear gas canister.
Of the 150 migrants in the group, 25 were detained. Most of the group members were turned back.
The recent incident is similar to a November 2018 incident that drew international criticism and a call to Mexico’s government for an investigation. The recent incident, the November 2018 incident and the recent deaths of two migrant children who were being detained have, in turn, fueled the debate over U.S. immigration policy. The latest incident also comes at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump is fighting for $5 billion to fund a wall to close the U.S.-Mexico border.
