As the longest partial government shutdown continues (in its fourth week, at press time), many people affected by it struggle with the hardships.
During the first two weeks of the shutdown, the number of furloughed federal workers seeking unemployment benefits jumped, topping 10,000 during the week of Jan. 5.
The Department of Labor said on Jan. 17 that number is double the number of federal employees who sought aid in the previous week, the Associated Press reported. Typically, fewer than a thousand former federal workers apply for jobless benefits each week.
Federal employees who are not working during the shutdown are eligible to claim unemployment aid, the Labor Department said. Those working without pay are not. Once the shutdown ends, even those sent home will have to repay the unemployment aid if they receive back pay.
The Department of Labor said more furloughed federal employees could apply for unemployment benefits in the weeks ahead.
