Understanding the internet: Activist shares insights about sexting

Sometimes, it can be difficult for teens and their parents to understand when it is safe for teens to use technology.
To help address this concern, Dos Mundos is launching a series to help parents understand how their children are using technology and whether they are spending their time online responsibly or not. The series begins with Ana Baquedano, a young activist who is advocating for revenge porn law reform in Mexico.
In May 2018, Baquedano fought to get a local law passed to punish those who perpetrate revenge porn. She is looking to do the same at the federal level. Now 23, she became an activist after being blackmailed at age 16 with a picture by her former boyfriend. Recently, she talked with Dos Mundos to share her insights into sexting and revenge porn.
Sexting is when two people send and receive sexual-oriented messages via technology, such as a phone text, an email message or a webcam video. It can involve words, photos and/or videos.
The problem is, once a picture is created, it becomes impossible to control where it ends up. However, Baquedano thinks that is more of cultural problem, rather than a technological one.
“Everyone has a right to enjoy their sexuality with the people they choose,” Baquedano said. “Sexting is a personal and intimate topic. … We have a lot to change as a society, instead of trying to control sexting. Sexting isn’t bad. … (What are) bad are our own violent, sexist and hurtful behaviors.”
One negative consequence of sexting is revenge porn. As PsychCentral.com and other outlets have noted, revenge porn is legally defined as “the sharing of private, sexual materials, either photos or videos, of another person without their consent and with the purpose of causing embarrassment or distress.”
“When someone shares pictures or videos without your consent, it makes you feel like it belongs to anyone besides you – like everyone has the right to choose who you are and what … your value (is),” Baquedano said.
Baquedano advises any revenge porn victim to seek support. Going through it without support can be dangerous – and it can be easier for the victim to start believing the hurtful comments, as she learned from her experience.
“Many people in my family didn’t support me,” the Mexican claimed. “But having my mom and friends’ support made a gigantic difference in my process. It made me feel strong.”
Baquedano also advises parents to be supportive of their teens when they are the victims of revenge porn.
“You are the only (one) capable of making them stronger and … (remembering) their value, … (of encouraging) them to be the happy person they want to be,” she said. “Unfortunately, if you turn your back on the situation, … you are playing with the life of the person you love the most.”
When teens are in a revenge porn situation, parents might assist them in developing coping strategies. Some recommended forms of assistance include the following:
*Spend time with them and check regularly on how they are doing: This will help them see the positive aspects of life.
*Encourage them to surround themselves with positive people: Friendships are important to children and a fundamental part of their self-esteem. A parent’s opinion matters to them, and encouraging them to have positive friendships will help build that self-esteem.
*Offer access to healthcare specialist and support services: Expert support will help if you or they are struggling with managing their feelings. They will be able to help both of you to manage a traumatic situation.

Me hizo sentir fuerte”.
