On April 25, Mexican media outlets reported that more than 1,000 migrants from Central America, Haiti and Cuba had escaped from a detention center in southern Mexico.
According to news reports, the breakout was organized by Cuban immigrants who were complaining about the conditions at the center.
A statement from the National Migration Institute in Mexico stated that more than 1,300 people had escaped. However, 700 of them had returned and the other 600 were still missing, the institute said.
The news comes amid reports over the past few months of President Trump threatening to close the U.S.-Mexico border if Mexico does not stop Central American immigrants coming into the United States.
Recently, for example, President Trump tweeted: “A very big caravan of over 20,000 people started up through Mexico. It has been reduced in size by Mexico, but is still coming. Mexico must apprehend the remainder or we will be forced to close that section of the Border & call up the Military. The Coyotes & Cartels have weapons.”
Since then, Trump also has made comments regarding the mass escape from the detention center.
Mexican authorities claim, however, that more than 15,000 immigrants have returned to their home countries. Moreover, Radio Television Marti reported recently that 148 people have been deported to Cuba because they were undocumented immigrants in Mexico.
A Cuban citizen who spoke to Dos Mundos on anonymity said his co-nationals might have escaped because they felt frustrated and feared deportation.
“I’m sure they were afraid of a possible deportation,” the Cuban said. “I’m sure they don’t want to go back to the conditions that people live in (when they are in) Cuba.”
Más de 1,000 migrantes escapan del centro de inmigración en México
El 25 de abril, medios de comunicación mexicanos reportaron que más de 1,000 migrantes de América Central, Haití y Cuba habían escapado de un centro de detención en el sur de México.
Según informes de prensa, el escape fue organizado por inmigrantes cubanos que se quejaban de las condiciones en el centro.
Un comunicado del Instituto Nacional de Migración en México indicó que más de 1,300 personas habían escapado. Sin embargo, 700 de ellos habían regresado y los otros 600 seguían desaparecidos, dijo el instituto.
