Tornado rips through Kansas City suburbs

By Roberta Pardo
A tornado ripped through northeastern Kansas Tuesday evening (May 28), leaving behind at least 12 people injured in Douglas County, several homes damaged and more than 13,000 homes without power.
The tornado touched down south of Lawrence. The police reported large trees were down, along with power lines and debris along roads on the southeastern edge of the city.
A Lawrence Memorial Hospital spokesperson said at least a dozen people were admitted to the hospital with tornado-related injuries, as reported by The Associated Press (AP). East of Lawrence, the town of Linwood was hit hard, with many homes and other buildings damaged, but no major injuries reported.
As the storm moved northeast, tornado warnings were put in place in the Kansas City area. The warnings ended by 7:30 p.m., as the area appeared to have been spared a direct hit.
Still, the storm forced evacuations at Kansas City International Airport. People took refuge in a tunnel leading to the parking garage for about an hour, the AP reported. Storm debris closed airfields. Flights finally resumed a little after midnight.
Tuesday’s area storms marked the 12th straight day that at least eight tornadoes had been reported to the National Weather Service, according to the AP. A similar stretch was last seen in 1980.
