Hundreds of USDA jobs headed to Kansas City

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced plans June 13 to relocate two research agencies to the Kansas City area.
Kansas City became the new headquarters for the Economic Research Service and National Institute of Food and Agriculture, two of the USDA’s principal research agencies, thanks to a two-state proposal from Kansas and Missouri.
“I’m thrilled that USDA has selected Kansas City to house these critical research agencies,” Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kansas, said in a statement, as reported by The Kansas City Star.
Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue said the relocation would save the department $300 million over 15 years, as reported by The Star. The savings would be put into agricultural research, he said.
“We did not undertake these relocations lightly, and we are doing it to enhance long-term sustainability and success of these agencies,” Perdue said. “The considerable taxpayer savings will allow us to be more efficient and improve our ability to retain more employees in the long run.”
But the relocation has been controversial in Washington, D.C., where critics say it will hinder collaboration with other federal agencies. Employees at both agencies have voted to unionize in protest of the relocation.
An estimated 550 lucrative federal jobs will move to the area as part of the relocation. It remains unclear where the site of the relocation will be – and on which side of the state line.
The cost of living is one factor believed to have tipped the balance in Kansas City’s favor. Other factors included the proximity to multiple land grant universities and the number of animal health companies in the region.
