Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. legacy

Commentary by Tere Siqueira
Many Americans, unfortunately, see Martin Luther King Jr. Day (observed Jan. 20 this year) as only a day off.
King’s inspirational leadership and speeches helped transform local protests into a historically important movement – the Civil Rights Movement – which deserves to be meaningfully recognized. Alas, his dream of equal rights for everyone has not been fully achieved.
Some of the biggest civil rights issues facing the United States concern the Latin community. Some ways to honor King’s legacy and have an impact on the Latin community include the following:

*Volunteer to support a Latin organization: Many such organizations fight for advocacy, education, health care and social services for the Latin community. You can have a big impact on other people’s lives, even if you volunteer for only a few hours per month. Some Latin-oriented Kansas City area organizations or national organizations with area chapters that could use your help include El Centro Inc., the League of United Latin American Citizens, Mission Adelante and Cristo Rey Kansas City.
*Recognize King’s relevance and history: Although King’s focus was on the African-American community, he inspired many Latinos, including labor leaders Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. His sense of justice resonated with those who wanted minorities to be an integral part of the United States. His sacrifices can provide the lessons and inspiration that help build the racial justice movements we need today.
*Unite with other minorities: King understood that unfair treatment toward one race could snowball in unequal treatment toward all minorities. As a result, many people of all races, including whites who believed in civil rights for all, joined King in the Civil Rights Movement. The results from that movement show there is a need for minorities to support one another.
*Appreciate the changes King made: Discrimination, bias and disadvantages still exist daily for people of color. That must be recognized before it can be challenged. But at the same time, it is important to recognize the many obstacles that were overcome by the movement King helped lead. King and other civil rights protesters secured many rights we Americans take for granted.
*Donate to racial/social justice organizations: Making donations can have a big impact on racial battles. Try supporting organizations based in your community whenever possible. Choosing those organizations will help you feel personally connected to their mission and motivate you to keep raising money on their behalf.
