WOMEN’S History Month: Negrete discusses why politics and civic engagement matter

By Angie Baldelomar

A passion for helping the community and creating change led Aude Negrete to a career in politics.
Born in Mexico City, Negrete moved to Overland Park, Kansas, when she was 14. She is the executive director of Kansas Hispanic and Latino American Affairs (KHLAA) with Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly’s office.
“We’re the link between all the Latinos and the governor’s office,” she said. “We work closely with the different agencies and the legislators to make sure that our community is being heard and that they also hear from our community.”
Negrete graduated in 2008 from the University of Kansas with majors in political science, international studies and Spanish. While in college, she interned for then-Kansas Rep. Delia Garcia, the first Latina and youngest female to serve in the Kansas Legislature and now the Kansas Secretary of Labor.
“I ended up interning for her at the legislature because I was passionate about the bill she was supporting and she needed help doing research to support policies and I enjoy doing that,” Negrete said. “I felt like it was a really good match when I started interning with her.”
That internship gave Negrete a first-hand experience on the process of lawmaking and a glimpse into how to make a difference through legislation.
Negrete’s experience as an immigrant has become a guiding force behind her work over the years. Seeing the income disparity in developing countries, where there were many people who did not have food or health care, motivated Negrete to want to help fix that in any way she could. At first, she did not know that desire would translate into a career in politics.
“I realized the more people that spoke up within the system, the more we could change it,” she said.
By the time Negrete was in college, she knew she would study political science.
“Politics are personal, and policies that could affect each … one of us are up for debate every day,” Negrete said.
That is why Negrete hopes more young Hispanics become more aware of what is happening at the local and state levels regarding policymaking.
“We should be at the table, making sure that we’re being heard and making sure that we’re letting them know how this policy or law is gonna affect us,” she said. “Otherwise, we’re not gonna be taken into consideration.”
Since graduation, Negrete has worked in the public and corporate spheres, focusing on helping the Latino community and the policies affecting them. Through her KHLAA work, she hopes to grow Hispanic and Latino representation.
“Our input is necessary; we should be represented to the same degree that we are present in the community,” she said.
To do so, Negrete highlights the importance of mentoring the new generation.
“We’re not leaders unless we’re creating the person that’s going to replace us or mentoring those that will come after us,” she said.
