By Tom Sawyer

Welcome tourists! In this edition, we have to talk about the capital of an European country, which is also one of the oldest and most famous cities in the world. We are talking about Rome, Italy. The city of Rome was founded in 753 BC, which means that this year it turns 2773 years-old. It has a population density of a little over 2.9 million inhabitants.

Rome is the city with the highest concentration of historical assets and architectural assets worldwide. Due to this is that since 1980 it belongs to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites.
Round-trip flights from Kansas to Rome have an average cost of $1,000 and most of them have two layovers. The best way to get to know the city is undoubtedly by walking since the city is like a huge museum and in each corner you’ll find something interesting to see. Similarly, the city has a metro and train system as well as taxi service, among others, that are relatively cheap. As far as lodging is concerned, the city of Rome is one of the most expensive in all of Europe. The average cost per room in 3-star hotels is $80 per night and in 5-star hotels is $250 per night. Italian cuisine is one of the most beloved and known worldwide, with pizza, lasagna and ravioli as some of its best known dishes worldwide, but I invite you to also try the Carpaccio, which are thin slices of raw meat or fish that are seasoned with olive oil and lemon; and the famous paninis, which are a type of pie stuffed with either salty or sweet foods. The average cost of a meal is $14 per person.

The places you should not miss during your next visit to Rome are:
*Roman Colosseum: it is the most impressive monument in all Rome. The Colosseum is undoubtedly the symbol of Rome. Its construction is almost 2000 years old since it began in the year 72 and ended in year 80 and was the largest Roman amphitheater and remained active for more than 500 years. It had a capacity of 50,000 spectators who enjoyed seeing exotic animals, executions of prisoners, reactions in battle in addition to the famous gladiatorial fights. Since 2007, it is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. The entrance fee is $14 and also includes access to the Roman Forum and the Palatine that I will mention later.
*Roman Forum: nerve center of ancient Rome. This is where public and religious life developed in ancient Rome. Here you can find a large number of temples among which are Saturn, Venus, Romulus, and Vesta, among others. You must also take a tour of the Via Sacra, which was the main street and communicated directly with the Colosseum. Visit the Arch of Titus, a symbol of Rome’s victory over Jerusalem. Visit the temple of Antoninus and Faustina, which is the best preserved of the entire Forum. You can spend hours and hours touring the entire Forum without getting bored and discovering around you small details that make it one of the best places to know throughout the city.
*Mount Palatine: part of one of the Seven Hills of Rome. It is 40 meters high above the Roman Forum and is considered the cradle of the Italian capital. It is believed that this site was inhabited since 1000 BC. In ancient times, the citizens of high society built large palaces on top of this mountain and of which important vestiges are still preserved. Among the most prominent places to visit on this site is the Domus Flavia Palace, which was built in 81 BC commissioned by the Emperor Domitian; the House of Livia, which was built in the first century BC and that is one of the best preserved; the Palatine Museum where the different findings found in the excavations made throughout Palatine are exposed and where you can find a variety of mosaics, sculptures among other objects belonging to the golden age of the Palatine.
*The Vatican: considered the world’s smallest country. It is located in the heart of Rome and is the nerve center of the Catholic Church. This city-state has less than 1000 people living there. Here is the residence of the Pope, which can be visited with prior reservation. Here you should visit: the Basilica of St. Peter as it is the most important religious building in the world since it houses the Holy See and is the Church of the Pope; St. Peter’s Square that is located at the foot of the Basilica and is one of the most beautiful in the world and that has a capacity for 300,000 people; the Vatican Museums, which bring together the best art collection of the Roman Catholic Church; and last but not least the Sistine Chapel, which is considered Michelangelo’s masterpiece and one of the greatest treasures of the Vatican, Rome and the world. What attracts the attention of the Chapel is not its architecture but all the frescoes that completely cover the walls and ceiling of it. Besides Michelangelo, Botticelli, Perugino and Luca are some of the other important artists who worked on it.
Without more for the moment I say goodbye, wishing you have enjoyed another article from the “Hanging Out Around the World” section. Have an excellent adventure. Greetings and have a safe trip!
