An up-and-coming artist is already making waves around the Kansas City area.
At 12, Jahziel Carmona has started showcasing his art around the city. On July 15, he showed his drawings at the Third Friday Art Walk in downtown Kansas City, Kansas.
The youngster, who started drawing on paper, specializes in digital drawing. Specifically, he draws on an iPad he got a few years ago as a Christmas present from his godfather.
“I prefer the iPad because there (are) endless colors, (so) I don’t have a limit to it,” he said.
Teresa Carmona, Jahziel’s mother, recalls he started drawing when he was about 7. Even then, her son’s drawings were great, she said. Once, she recalled, he covered the bumpy walls in her house with paper and drew all over it.
“I was impressed he not only managed to draw well but he didn’t even break the paper,” the elder Carmona said. “I knew then that he would get far.”
Teresa Carmona’s support has been fundamental to her son’s artistic growth. She has always made sure to get him the tools he need to make art and/or sign him up for classes to help him improve, she said.
The showcases started about a month ago, Teresa Carmona said.
“One of the teachers at his school had reached out to me and said that there was an art show in Fairway and that Jahziel should showcase his work,” she said.
Teresa Carmona agreed.
Since then, Teresa and Jahziel, encouraged by her sister, have printed out much of his work to sell. He even created a special design for his mother for Independence Day that ended up on family T-shirts.
Teresa Carmona hopes to one day see her son’s art displayed somewhere prominent in the city.
“To be able to see his artwork somewhere in the city, whether it’s on a building or the bus, where everybody could see, it gets me a little teary-eyed because, as a single parent, I want to be able to see my son do amazing things,” she said. “As a parent, you want to see your kid succeed and do amazing, and I would love to see him go very far and be able to walk down the street and see his work.”

El joven, que empezó dibujando en papel, se especializa en dibujo digital. En concreto, dibuja en un iPad que recibió hace unos años como regalo de Navidad de su padrino.
“Prefiero el iPad porque (hay) colores infinitos, (así que) no tengo un límite”, dijo.
Teresa Carmona, la madre de Jahziel, recuerda que él comenzó a dibujar cuando tenía unos 7 años. Incluso entonces, los dibujos de su hijo eran geniales, dijo. Una vez, recordó, él cubrió las paredes llenas de relieves de su casa con papel y dibujó por todas partes.
“Me impresionó que no sólo logró dibujar bien, sino que ni siquiera rompió el papel”, dijo la mayor de los Carmona. “Entonces supe que llegaría lejos”.
El apoyo de Teresa ha sido fundamental en el crecimiento artístico de su hijo. Siempre se ha asegurado de conseguirle las herramientas que necesita para hacer arte y/o inscribirlo en clases para ayudarlo a mejorar, dijo.
Las exhibiciones comenzaron hace aproximadamente un mes, dijo Teresa Carmona.
“Uno de los maestros de su escuela se acercó a mí y me dijo que había una exhibición de arte en Fairway y que Jahziel debería exhibir su trabajo”, dijo.
Teresa estuvo de acuerdo.
Desde entonces, Teresa y Jahziel, animados por su hermana, han impreso gran parte de su obra para venderla. Incluso creó un diseño especial para su madre para el Día de la Independencia que terminó en las camisetas familiares.
Teresa Carmona espera algún día ver el arte de su hijo exhibido en algún lugar destacado de la ciudad.
“Poder ver su obra de arte en algún lugar de la ciudad, ya sea en un edificio o en el autobús, donde todos puedan verlo, me pone un poco llorosa porque, como madre soltera, quiero poder ver a mi hijo hacer cosas asombrosas”, dijo. “Como madre, quieres ver a tu hijo triunfar y que le vaya increíble, y me encantaría verlo llegar muy lejos y poder caminar por la calle y ver su trabajo”.
