March is Social Work Month, dedicated to educating people about the importance of the work done by the nation’s social workers. In Wyandotte County, social workers play important roles throughout the community, whether it’s at the Unified Government Public Health Department (UGPHD), hospitals and mental health centers, schools, government, community organizations or social service agencies.
What Social Workers Do
Social workers enrich society by empowering people and communities to overcome hurdles that prevent them from living life to the fullest. According to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), “people become social workers because they have a strong desire to help others and make society a better place.”
Social work is one of the fastest growing professions in the United States, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Currently, more than 700,000 people are professional social workers in the U.S., and that number is expected to climb to approximately 800,000 by 2030.
Social workers are key parts of several divisions within the UGPHD. In fact, the new Acting Director of the UGPHD is Ambur Banner, who has a Master’s in Social Work (MSW) degree. Other social workers within the UGPHD include:
*Jennifer Allen Caudle, who is the maternal child health social worker for UGPHD clinical services. She works with clients to provide information, education and resources such as emergency assistance, housing, food and mental health resources, among many other duties.
*Christina VanCleave, who serves as the Program Supervisor for Health Program Initiatives and Application Services.
*Christina Casper and Michelle Smith, who work with the Healthy Families program.
“Growing up in poverty and being a teen mother gave me experiences that I share with many of the people we serve at the UGPHD,” explains Banner. “Fortunately, I lived in a community where the public health department could link me to the community resources I needed, and that created an intense desire in me to be able to uplift people and change their lives, the same way my life was changed. That’s why I’m a social worker.”
“Social workers are the connectors,” says Allen Caudle. “We help clients access services and resources that help them succeed. We guide them and link them to programs and services that improve the overall health and quality of life for the patient and their family.”
“Social workers are vital to the public health system,” says VanCleave. “Social workers are the gate keepers to resources, and they provide clients the opportunity to be validated and express their needs.”
All of the UGPHD social workers agree that it’s a rewarding profession.
“The satisfaction of seeing the social workers on our staff interact with clients is something I treasure,” says Banner. “They aren’t just providing resources and a way for people and their families to have better health and better futures – they’re providing a sense of hope and purpose. That’s the heart and soul of what social work was created to do.”

Deadline for Applying for Sales Tax and Utility Rebate is FRIDAY, March 31!
Time is running out for seniors to apply for tax rebates – eligible seniors must apply by the end of business on FRIDAY, March 31 for the Sales Tax and Utility rebates. These are available for eligible residents of Kansas City, KS – these rebates cover a portion of your BPU, gas or AT&T utility bills and/or have paid sales tax.
Applications for the Homestead and Safe Senior rebates are due by April 18. These rebates are available for eligible Wyandotte County residents for a portion of your property taxes.
Walk-in applicants are welcome at the Clerk’s office at 701 N. 7th Street from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. To learn more about the Homestead and Safe Senior Rebates, required documentation and see locations where you can apply visit wycokck.org/clerk and click on the box that says “Senior Tax Rebates.” If you need free transportation to an application site, call 3-1-1 at least two days ahead of applying.
Senior Resource Fair
In conjunction with the senior tax rebate deadlines, Mayor Tyrone Garner is hosting a Senior Resource Fair on Friday, March 31 from 9 a.m. to noon in the City Hall lobby at 701 N. 7th Street in KCK. Attendees can get free information on a variety of resources for seniors from various community groups, in addition to applying for their tax rebates in the Clerk’s office.
Attendees may park behind City Hall in Upper Lot E (in front of the Health Department) or find street parking along Barnett Ave. and Ann Ave. Seniors who plan to apply for their tax rebates at the Clerk’s office on Friday can get free transportation by calling 3-1-1 at least two days prior to the event.

Marzo es el Mes del Trabajo Social, dedicado a educar a las personas sobre la importancia del trabajo realizado por los trabajadores sociales de la nación. En el condado de Wyandotte, los trabajadores sociales desempeñan funciones importantes en toda la comunidad, ya sea en el Departamento de Salud Pública del Gobierno Unificado (UGPHD, por sus siglas en inglés), hospitales y centros de salud mental, escuelas, organizaciones gubernamentales, comunitarias o agencias de servicios sociales.
Qué hacen los trabajadores sociales
Los trabajadores sociales enriquecen a la sociedad al empoderar a las personas y las comunidades para que superen los obstáculos que les impiden vivir la vida al máximo. Según la Asociación Nacional de Trabajadores Sociales (NASW, por sus siglas en inglés), “las personas se convierten en trabajadores sociales porque tienen un fuerte deseo de ayudar a los demás y hacer de la sociedad un lugar mejor”.
El trabajo social es una de las profesiones de más rápido crecimiento en Estados Unidos, según la Oficina de Estadísticas Laborales. Actualmente, más de 700.000 personas son trabajadores sociales profesionales en el país y se espera que ese número aumente a aproximadamente 800.000 para 2030.
Los trabajadores sociales son partes clave de varias divisiones dentro del UGPHD. De hecho, la nueva Directora Interina del UGPHD es Ambur Banner, quien tiene una Maestría en Trabajo Social (MSW). Otros trabajadores sociales dentro del UGPHD incluyen:

Por eso soy trabajadora social”.

“La satisfacción de ver a los trabajadores sociales de nuestro personal interactuar con los clientes es algo que atesoro”, dice Banner. “No sólo brindan recursos y una manera para que las personas y sus familias tengan una mejor salud y un mejor futuro, sino que brindan un sentido de esperanza y propósito. Ese es el corazón y el alma para lo que se creó el trabajo social”.

Estos están disponibles para los residentes elegibles de Kansas City, KS: estos reembolsos cubren una parte de sus facturas de servicios públicos de BPU, gas o AT&T y/o han pagado impuestos sobre las ventas.
Las solicitudes para los reembolsos Homestead y Safe Senior deben presentarse antes del 18 de abril. Estos reembolsos están disponibles para los residentes elegibles del condado de Wyandotte para una parte de sus impuestos sobre la propiedad.

Los asistentes pueden obtener información gratuita sobre una variedad de recursos para personas mayores de varios grupos comunitarios, además de solicitar sus reembolsos de impuestos en la oficina del secretario.
