Area mother finds motherhood ‘so beautiful and so rewarding’

By Angie Baldelomar
For area resident Maria Acosta, being a mother is the greatest gift.
“(Motherhood) is something so beautiful and so rewarding,” she said.
In honor of Mother’s Day, observed on May 14 this year, Acosta is sharing her experience with motherhood. Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, Acosta has been a Kansas City, Missouri, resident for two decades. Her husband worked here and brought her to the area 20 years ago. By then, she already had two kids: Mateo and Cindy.
When Mateo was born, she recounted how she was never afraid because Acosta had her own mother by her side.
“We were always together and she always helped me with my kids,” she said.
Acosta’s mother helped her even after moving to the United States. Acosta’s third child, Fidel Jr., was born in Kansas City a few years later.
“My mom came to help me when he was born,” she said. “She had a visa and came to help me with him.”
Each of her experiences with her kids was unique, Acosta said. Her firstborn was a boy, then she had a girl and then she had a baby in a different country. Seeing them grow up and become their own people is her favorite part of motherhood.
“It fills me with joy to see my kids all grown up and see them thrive,” she said. “I see them happy and positive and with the will to work for their goals.”
Acosta’s youngest son is graduating high school this year. That only adds to her pride, she said.
“(All these milestones) are such beautiful moments that make you say, ‘It was all worth it – all the efforts one makes as a mother,’” she said.
Acosta has a new role now that she enjoys: grandma. She has four grandkids that she loves to spoil every chance she gets, she said.
Acosta advises new mothers to love their kids.
“Love your kids and take care of them,” she said. “Take care of yourselves, too, because if you’re O.K., your kids are, too.”
