Fathers play an instrumental role in shaping our lives – and Father’s Day, celebrated on the third Sunday in June in the United States, is the perfect occasion to express our gratitude for their unwavering support and love.
For Hispanic families, particularly those with fathers who’ve come to the United States from Latin America, the holiday provides a unique opportunity to honor fathers while embracing and celebrating cultural traditions. Here are some creative, memorable ways to celebrate this special day:
*Create a heritage map: For this activity, gather the family and embark on a meaningful project to visually represent your father’s journey from his home country to the United States. Start by collecting stories about his past, the town where he grew up, his favorite spots and the path that led him here. Incorporate landmarks, such as his childhood home, schools, parks or places where significant events occurred. This activity serves as a wonderful opportunity to learn more about your family’s history and instill a sense of pride in your cultural roots.
*Organize a cultural storytelling event: Encourage your father to share tales and anecdotes about his life back in his home country. Record the stories to keep as a family treasure or transcribe them into a beautiful book. This will not only enrich the family’s knowledge about its heritage, but also create a priceless collection of personal stories for future generations.
*Host a traditional Latin dance lesson: Research and hire a professional dancer who specializes in Latin dances, such as salsa, bachata or tango. Not only will this provide an enjoyable, interactive family bonding experience, but it also will provide a way to preserve and pass on important cultural traditions.
*Stage a sports and games day: If your father is a sports enthusiast, dedicate the day to his favorite physical activities. Organize a friendly soccer match or a basketball game at a local park or in your backyard. Include every family member and consider making team jerseys to add to the fun. If your father prefers indoor games, arrange a game night featuring popular board games, card games or puzzles. Plan this digital journey to include famous landmarks, museums or the streets of his hometown. This sentimental journey will provide an opportunity for your father to share more about his heritage.
