For many Latinos, December is an important month of celebrations.
During December, many Latinos gather to celebrate their faith and traditions. Specifically, they gather for two faith-related commemorations: the appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Las Posadas.
Both Our Lady of Guadalupe and Las Posadas are rooted in the religious landscape of Spanish colonization. As multiple sources have stated, the honoring of Our Lady of Guadalupe goes back to 1531, when she reportedly appeared to Juan Diego. According to the story, Our Lady of Guadalupe gave him a mission, urging him to take a message from her to a priest about constructing a church on the Hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City. The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe imprinted on Juan Diego’s tunic was interpreted as a miraculous symbol. The tunic continues to be displayed at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.
Every year, on Dec. 12, Our Lady of Guadalupe is honored with celebrations in churches in many countries, including in the United States, with people bringing flowers, offering serenades and participating in Las Mananitas (Mañanitas in Spanish).
In addition to honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe, many Latinos observe Las Posadas, which take place Dec. 16-25 each year. During Las Posadas, they re-enact Mary and Joseph’s quest for shelter before Jesus Christ’s birth.
As part of the ceremonies, people sing Christmas carols and drink punch. They also display symbolic items. For example, pinatas (piñatas in Spanish) are displayed to represent sins and nativity sets are displayed to represent Mary and Joseph’s quest.
Anyone interested in participating in events related to the miracle of Our Lady of Guadalupe and/or Las Posadas is advised to contact churches in the Kansas City area and ask about their activities.

Abrazando las tradiciones latinas: la Virgen de Guadalupe y Las Posadas
Para muchos latinos, diciembre es un mes importante de celebraciones.
En diciembre, muchos latinos se reúnen para celebrar su fe y tradiciones. Específicamente se reúnen para dos festividades religiosas: la aparición de la Virgen de Guadalupe y las posadas.
Tanto la Virgen de Guadalupe como las posadas tienen sus raíces en el panorama religioso de la colonización española. Como han citado múltiples fuentes, la celebración de la Virgen de Guadalupe se remonta a 1531, cuando, según se reporta, se apareció a Juan Diego. Según la historia, la Virgen de Guadalupe le dio una misión, instándolo a llevar un mensaje de ella a un sacerdote sobre la construcción de una iglesia en el Cerro del Tepeyac, cerca de la Ciudad de México. La imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe impresa en la túnica de Juan Diego fue interpretada como un símbolo milagroso. La túnica continúa exhibida en la Basílica de la Virgen de Guadalupe en la Ciudad de México.
Cada año, el 12 de diciembre, la Virgen de Guadalupe es celebrada con celebraciones en iglesias de muchos países, incluido Estados Unidos, con personas llevando flores, ofreciendo serenatas y participando en Las Mañanitas.
