The Midwest, a key agricultural region of the United States, is facing severe repercussions from climate change, according to the “Fifth National Climate Assessment.”
As reported by multiple sources, the federal government report reveals a web of climate-induced changes, particularly those impacting crop production. The Midwest, which produces more than 30 percent of the world’s corn and soybeans, is experiencing intensified challenges such as increased extreme precipitation events and fluctuations between wet and dry conditions. Those climatic shifts have led to heightened pest and disease transmission, and water quality degradation.
The effects of climate change extend beyond agriculture. Public health and infrastructure in the Midwest are reportedly being affected, too, according to a story by Kavahn Mansouri for KCUR-FM (89.3) and the Midwest Newsroom, posted in December 2023 on KBIA-FM’s website. Mansouri reported the region is grappling with rising temperatures and extreme weather patterns, including droughts and floods, thus posing health risks and risks to the stability of infrastructure systems.
To address those and other climate-related issues, efforts are reportedly underway to recognize the economic and social benefits of preserving natural lands and building resilient transportation and energy networks.
