A Hispanic teacher has been named among the Teachers of the Year at Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS).
Luis Portillo, Kansas City Virtual Academy music teacher, was recently named Teacher of the Year for the academy. According to the KCPS website, the Teacher of the Year Program “honors the educators who structure their classrooms to increase performance and provide exceptional experiences, no matter what.” One teacher at every KCPS school is selected for the award.
“I wasn’t expecting that, you know, especially because it’s my first year here,” Portillo said. “I feel honored, grateful. I’m on cloud nine because of the support that I have from the staff, community, parents.”
For Portillo, who has taught for almost 30 years overall, this recognition is a testament to what he’s accomplishing with his students.
“It gives me more credibility within the community and within the schools — that they see that I’m doing something well,” he said.
Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, Portillo moved to the Greater Kansas City area with his family when he was little. Raised in both Kansas Cities, he knew he wanted to be a music teacher since he was in high school, he said.
As a music teacher, Portillo has taught in both Kansas Cities and in California.
Portillo believes the key to being a good teacher is connecting with students — whether teaching in person or online.
“I know I have to have a relationship with students, number one, and I do believe in friendship and mutual respect — and if we have that, the students will learn,” he said. “I always try to teach them things that are practical, things that they can use. I give them the secrets to be able to learn how to play instruments.”
Besides teaching, Portillo pursues music in other ways. He’s a member of Mariachi Estrella KC and performs with Trio Aztlan. One of his goals is to create a youth mariachi group that’s supported by local organizations, he said.
Another goal of Portillo’s is to continue impacting the lives of students in ways that brought him his Teacher of the Year award.
“I am truly honored to receive this recognition and am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to our students’ growth and education,” he said in a Facebook post. “Thank you all for your unwavering support and encouragement!”
Luis Portillo nombrado entre el grupo de Maestros del Año en KCPS
Un maestro hispano ha sido nombrado entre los Maestros del Año en las Escuelas Públicas de Kansas City (KCPS, por sus siglas en inglés).
Luis Portillo, maestro de música de Kansas City Virtual Academy, fue nombrado recientemente Maestro del Año de la academia. Según el sitio web de KCPS, el Programa de Maestro del Año “honra a los educadores que estructuran sus aulas para aumentar el desempeño y brindar experiencias excepcionales, pase lo que pase”. Se selecciona un maestro en cada escuela de KCPS para el premio.
“No esperaba eso, ya sabes, especialmente porque es mi primer año aquí”, dijo Portillo. “Me siento honrado, agradecido. Estoy en las nubes gracias al apoyo que tengo del personal, la comunidad y los padres”.
Para Portillo, quien ha enseñado durante casi 30 años en total, este reconocimiento es un testimonio de lo que está logrando con sus alumnos.
“Me da más credibilidad dentro de la comunidad y dentro de las escuelas: ven que estoy haciendo algo bien”, dijo.
Nacido en Chihuahua, México, Portillo se mudó al área metropolitana de Kansas City con su familia cuando era pequeño. Criado en Kansas City, Kansas, y Kansas City, Missouri, sabía que quería ser profesor de música desde que estaba en la escuela secundaria, dijo.
Como profesor de música, ha enseñado tanto en ambas Kansas City como en California.
Portillo cree que la clave para ser un buen profesor es conectarse con los estudiantes, ya sea enseñando en persona o en línea.
“Sé que debo tener una relación con los estudiantes, lo primero, y creo en la amistad y el respeto mutuo, y si tenemos eso, los estudiantes aprenderán”, dijo. “Siempre trato de enseñarles cosas que sean prácticas, cosas que puedan utilizar. Les doy los secretos para poder aprender a tocar instrumentos”.
Además de enseñar, Portillo se dedica a la música de otras formas. Es miembro del Mariachi Estrella KC y actúa con el Trío Aztlán. Uno de sus objetivos es crear un grupo de mariachi juvenil que cuente con el apoyo de organizaciones locales, dijo.
Otro de sus objetivos es seguir impactando las vidas de los estudiantes de la manera que le valió el premio de Maestro del Año.
“Me siento verdaderamente honrado de recibir este reconocimiento y agradecido por la oportunidad de contribuir al crecimiento y la educación de nuestros estudiantes”, dijo en una publicación de Facebook. “¡Gracias a todos por su inquebrantable apoyo y aliento!”
