Longtime Greater Kansas City area resident Maria Tellez loves being a mother.
“Being a mother is the best thing ever,” Tellez said.
Tellez has three kids. All are grown, but they’ll always be Tellez’s babies, she said.
A native of Mexico, Tellez settled in the Kansas City area when her husband left the U.S. Navy and wanted to move home. For him, that was the Kansas City area.
But only seven months after moving, Tellez’s husband was killed, leaving her to raise three kids — then ages 7, 4 and 2 — as a single mother. She remained in the area, though, because moving back to California was more expensive, she said.
Tellez’s boss at work was fundamental in helping her navigate those months after her husband’s passing, she recalled. She recounted how her boss suggested attending cosmetology school. Tellez, who was working in daycare, thought it couldn’t be done with three kids and work, but her boss said Tellez could work part time, and she would watch the kids.
“If it wasn’t for her, I don’t know what I would be doing right at this moment,” Tellez said.
What Tellez is doing is working as a hairdresser — her profession for 32 years. She owns the salon Contemporary Hair Design in Blue Springs, Missouri. Her eldest daughter works with her as an esthetician.
Coincidentally, Tellez has been remarried for 32 years, too. Her husband has “been a great father for my children,” she said.
But things weren’t easy, even after her career and life changes. Her middle child got diagnosed with leukemia at 8. Around that time, her youngest and only son needed surgery for a birthmark; thus, Tellez was in the hospital a lot, on top of working to keep paying her bills. Luckily, her husband was there for her and the children, she said.
Those days are far behind Tellez. Her children are all healthy. In addition, she has eight grandchildren.
Tellez’s favorite part of being a mom and grandma is getting together, she said.
“Sometimes, they surprise me and come on Sundays and cook at my house,” Tellez said. “They make my day by showing up.”
In observance of Mother’s Day (May 12 this year), Tellez has some advice for new mothers: Pay attention to your children.
“For me, I knew when my daughter was getting sick; she was sleeping a lot,” she said. “Anything that they need, be there for them. … Just do what your heart tells you to do with your kids and try to be the best mother in the world.”

Téllez tiene tres hijos. Todos son adultos, pero siempre serán sus bebés, dijo.
Nacida en Mexico, ella se estableció en el área de Kansas City cuando su esposo dejó la Marina de EE.UU. y quiso mudarse a casa. Para él, esa era el área de Kansas City.
Pero sólo siete meses después de mudarse, su esposo fue asesinado, dejándola a cargo de criar a tres hijos (que entonces tenían 7, 4 y 2 años) como madre soltera. Sin embargo, permaneció en el área porque regresar a California era más caro, dijo.
La jefa de Téllez en el trabajo fue fundamental para ayudarla en esos meses posteriores al fallecimiento de su esposo, recordó. Ella contó cómo su jefa le sugirió asistir a la escuela de cosmetología. Téllez, que trabajaba en la guardería, pensó que no podría hacer eso con tres niños y teniendo que trabajar, pero su jefa le dijo que podía trabajar medio tiempo y que ella cuidaría a los niños.
“Si no fuera por ella, no sé qué estaría haciendo en este momento”, dijo.
Téllez trabaja como peluquera desde hace 32 años. Es dueña de su propio salón, Contemporary Hair Design, en Blue Springs, Missouri. Su hija mayor trabaja con ella en el salón como esteticista.
Casi tres años después, conoció a su nuevo marido. Han estado casados durante 32 años en este momento.
“Y ha sido un gran padre para mis hijos”, dijo.
Pero las cosas no fueron fáciles ni siquiera después de eso. A su hija menor le diagnosticaron leucemia a los ocho años. Casi al mismo tiempo, su único hijo, el más pequeño también tuvo que ser operado por una marca de nacimiento, por lo que Téllez estuvo mucho tiempo en el hospital. Además de trabajar para seguir pagando las cuentas. Por suerte, su marido estaba ahí para ella y sus hijos.
Ahora esos días han quedado atrás y sus tres hijos están sanos. Téllez tiene ocho nietos. Su parte favorita de ser madre y abuela es pasar tiempo con ellos.
“A veces me sorprenden y vienen los domingos a cocinar en mi casa”, dijo. “Me alegran el día al aparecer”.
El consejo ofrece a las nuevas madres es que presten atención a sus hijos.
“Yo sabía cuando mi hija se enfermaba, dormía mucho”, dijo. “Cualquier cosa que necesiten, estén ahí para ellos. … Hagan lo que su corazón les diga que hagan con sus hijos y traten de ser la mejor madre del mundo”.
