Father of the Year: Ed Reyes“Having a child will change you”

By Chara

Edward Reyes, a resident of Overland Park, Kan., has faced various challenges in life. However, the love he feels for his family inspires him to live life to the fullest.
“Being together as a family is everything,” he said.
His wife, Susie, and his children, Kate and Kylie, have been a constant source of inspiration for him. Ed describes having children as a profound experience that introduced him to a new depth of love.
“Having a child will change you. You will experience a level of love you’ve never felt before. It’s magical,” he said.
For Reyes, fatherhood is an evolving journey, but the love he feels for his children remains untouchable.
“They grow up, and you continue to love them. Even when they are 50 years old, you would still do anything for them. I hope that as they grow older and have their own kids, they understand the love that a parent has for their children,” he said.
His approach to fatherhood involves guiding his children, teaching them how to navigate life, and helping them develop good habits.
“I try to show them how to make good choices, be a good friend, help around the house, and just be good human beings. I want them to learn skills to survive on their own. I’ve realized that while you can give them the tools and understanding, they have to learn on their own,” he explained.
He describes his children with unique qualities that make each of them special.
“Kylie is sharp, witty, and competitive. Kate, on the other hand, is my intellectual artist with a big heart,” Reyes said.
His parenting style has been influenced by both of his parents. His father, Manuel Reyes, was compassionate, friendly, and funny. His mother, Clara Reyes, was wise and always advised her children not to be taken advantage of.
“That’s what I’ve tried to share with my kids. We always try to laugh together and give each other hugs because it feels good and it’s important. My dad wore his heart on his sleeve and made sure our family knew it. My mom ensured we made the right choices and analyzed all our options,” he said.
Reyes hopes his children remember him as a father who was always there to help them with everything they needed.
“As a parent, I’m starting to realize that there are chapters or phases in your relationship with your kids. Having someone to be a mentor, advisor, and most importantly, someone who loves unconditionally is very important,” he said.
To future parents, Reyes advises educating themselves on how to be good dads by utilizing various resources. He recommends the Love & Logic Institute on Facebook as a valuable tool.
“The resources my wife and I found were incredibly helpful. It’s important to stay informed,” he concluded.
