Araceli Delatorre owes her contribution to this year’s “Parade of Hearts” exhibit to her family – specifically, one family member.
“My cousin sent me an Instagram post about it saying I should join,” she said.
Delatorre followed her cousin’s advice. She contributed a piece titled “Corazon Floreciente” to the exhibit of decorated heart sculptures on display through mid-August in various public places in the Greater Kansas City area. Her design, a floral pattern inspired by Mexican art, is at North Oak Trafficway and 106th Street near Fox Hill Elementary School in Kansas City, Missouri.
“My design wasn’t the first one I made; it was my second one, and it seemed to be a better fit, as much as I would have loved to do my first design,” she said. “I’m very grateful to have gotten the chance, regardless.”
Delatorre credited her boyfriend with helping her conceive the design.
“I wanted it to be cultural, but I wasn’t sure what else I would have done than my first design, which was a reference to the Mexican flag,” she said. “My boyfriend said I should do flowers, so I immediately thought of floral patterns you see on Mexican clothing and bags.”
The contribution is a nod to Delatorre’s Mexican-American heritage.
“My father was born in Juarez, Mexico, and my mother (was) born in Missouri,” she said.
Delatorre grew up in Kansas City, Missouri’s Northeast area and attended the Foreign Language Academy from pre-K through the eighth grade. It was in those family and educational environments that she developed her passion for art.
“I got into art very young, always seeing my mother do small art projects at home,” she recalled.
Delatorre’s mother and school art teachers fostered her creativity by encouraging her to create and appreciate public art pieces and murals, she said. As she’s gotten older, she has found encouragement to create art from multiple sources, including other artists.
“My inspiration comes from the artists I’ve grown to see,” she said. “Not just the ones I learn in school, but my peers because they all have such unique and amazing art and styles – not one is the same.”
Artists Delatorre admires include Marcos Alvarado and Tahlia Stanton.
“I really admire Marcos Alvarado for his never-ending waves of creation,” she said. “I admire … Tahlia Stanton for her breathtaking portraits.”
For Delatorre, art provides opportunities to show her inner self. She prefers artworks that have “deeper meaning to them,” she said.
“When I’m not doing commissions, I … try to make pieces that I … (enjoy) and that have a deep meaning,” Delatorre said. “I do a lot of traditional and digital art, and both are challenging since I am mostly self-taught.”
Delatorre advises young people interested in art to follow their creativity.
“Do whatever your hands are leading you to create, even if it doesn’t make sense in your head at times,” she said.

La Familia es la clave en la contribución de Araceli Delatorre al “Parade of Hearts”
Araceli Delatorre debe su contribución a la exhibición del “Parade of Hearts” de este año a su familia, específicamente, un miembro de la familia.
“Mi primo me envió una publicación de Instagram diciéndome que participe”, dijo.
Delatorre siguió el consejo de su primo. Ella contribuyó con una pieza titulada “Corazón Floreciente” a la exhibición de esculturas de corazones decoradas que se exhiben hasta mediados de agosto en varios lugares públicos en el área metropolitana de Kansas City. Su diseño, un patrón floral inspirado en el arte mexicano, se encuentra en North Oak Trafficway y la calle 106 cerca de la Escuela Primaria Fox Hill en Kansas City, Missouri.
“Mi diseño no fue el primero que hice; era mi segundo, y parecía encajar mejor, por mucho que me hubiera encantado hacer mi primer diseño”, dijo. “Estoy muy agradecida de haber tenido la oportunidad, independientemente”.
Delatorre le dio crédito a su novio por ayudarla a concebir el diseño.
“Quería que fuera cultural, pero no estaba segura de qué más habría hecho aparte de mi primer diseño, que era una referencia a la bandera mexicana”, dijo. “Mi novio dijo que debería hacer flores, así que inmediatamente pensé en los patrones florales que ves en la ropa y las bolsas mexicanas”.
La contribución es un guiño a su herencia mexicana-estadounidense.
“Mi padre nació en Juárez, México, y mi madre (fue) nacida en Missouri”, dijo.
Delatorre creció en el área noreste de Kansas City, Missouri y asistió a la Academia de Idiomas Extranjeros desde Pre-K hasta el octavo grado. Fue en esos entornos familiares y educativos que desarrolló su pasión por el arte.
“Me metí en el arte muy joven, siempre viendo a mi madre hacer pequeños proyectos de arte en casa”, recordó.
Su madre y sus maestros de arte fomentaron su creatividad alentándola a crear y apreciar piezas de arte público y murales, dijo. A medida que envejece, ha encontrado aliento para crear arte a partir de múltiples fuentes, incluidos otros artistas.
“Mi inspiración proviene de los artistas que he llegado a ver”, dijo. “No solo los que aprendo en la escuela, sino mis compañeros porque todos tienen arte y estilos tan únicos y sorprendentes, ni uno es el mismo”.
Los artistas que admira incluyen Marcos Alvarado y Tahlia Stanton.
“Realmente admiro a Marcos Alvarado por sus ondas interminables de creación”, dijo. “Admiro … a Tahlia Stanton por sus impresionantes retratos”.
Para Delatorre, el arte brinda oportunidades para mostrar su ser interior. Ella prefiere las obras de arte que tienen “significado más profundo”, dijo.
“Cuando no estoy haciendo comisiones, … trato de hacer piezas que yo … (disfruto) y que tengan un significado profundo”, dijo. “Hago mucho arte tradicional y digital, y ambos son desafiantes ya que soy en su mayoría autodidacta”.
Delatorre aconseja a los jóvenes interesados en el arte que sigan su creatividad.
“Haz lo que tus manos te lleven a crear, incluso si no tiene sentido en tu cabeza a veces”, dijo.
