Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes II and his fellow Chiefs, winners of Super Bowls LVII and LVIII, were pursuing a threepeat when they faced Philadelphia in Super Bowl LIX at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The Eagles crushed the Chiefs 40-22 in the NFL’s annual championship game.
“Credit to the Eagles, man,” Mahomes told reporters during a postgame press conference. “They played better than us, from start to finish.”
Offensively, Jalen Hurts led the Eagles (18-3) to victory, completing 17 of 22 passes for 210 net yards (221 gross) and two touchdowns, with one interception. Hurts, who was named Most Valuable Player, also rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.
With the contributions of Hurts and others, the Eagles won their fifth NFL title and second during the Super Bowl era. Before the Super Bowl era, Philadelphia won titles in 1948, 1949 and 1960. The Eagles also won Super Bowl LII and nearly defeated the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII.
“We had a special group this year,” Hurts told Fox Sports sideline reporter Erin Andrews. “We were able to learn from the past, get some nice, new pieces and get over that hump.”
Philadelphia’s defense was particularly special Sunday, Hurts suggested. When asked by Andrews to discuss the defense’s importance in the pummeling of Kansas City (17-3), he repeated an oft-uttered maxim in football: “Defense wins championships.”
“We (offense) saw how they played today,” he said. “We saw the difference they made in the game, and they gave us opportunities, gave us short fields and we were able to do what we do.”
The defense also produced a touchdown of its own. With the Chiefs facing third-and-16 from their 24-yard line roughly midway through the second quarter, Eagles defensive back Cooper DeJean intercepted a pass by Mahomes, returning it 38 yards for a touchdown.
The pick six was among three turnovers committed by Kansas City – two interceptions and one fumble. Mahomes blamed himself for the miscues.
“Those early turnovers … (swung) the momentum of the game and they capitalized on them,” he told the press.
The turnovers were part of what Chiefs coach Andy Reid called “a rough day.”
“We didn’t really play well in any of the phases,” Reid said during the opening remarks of his postgame press conference. “Didn’t coach good enough. They (Eagles) did a nice job. I’m proud of our guys, though, for the battle, the fight that they put in throughout the year and all the games that they played over the last few years. … My hat goes off to the guys for that.”
Reid also considered the loss a learning experience.
“Like most games here, when you don’t do very well, you learn from it as a coach, you learn from it as a player,” he said. “And you move on.”
