Woodland volunteers from Lenexa Rotary Club and Shawnee Mission Northwest Interact Club traveled from June 8 to 13 to Puerto Rico to implement a water project in the community of the municipalities of Yabucoa and Humacao.
The volunteer team unified efforts with local leaders, teachers and nurses from the communities of Yabucoa and Humacao in the implementation of access to safe drinking water, a project that included the distribution of filters for water purification, painting a community center that is used for disaster response training, a community garden and educational camps for youths.
The team also supported planting more seeds in the community garden, cleaning up a mile of Maunabo beach as part of preserving the environment and also participated at the Juncos Rotary Club weekly meeting.
“This is the third year that our club and the youth of Shawnee Mission Northwest Interact have participated in this program in coordination with the Woodland Charity organization that has been supporting these communities since Hurricane Maria in 2017,” commented Steve Adams, upcoming president of the Lenexa Rotary Club 2025-2026.
“We are very grateful to the Lenexa Club for the support to the Shawnee Mission Northwest Interact,” said Elise Russell, vicepresident of the Interact Club at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School. “The support of the Lenexa Rotary Club is so important because we are able to travel to these communities in Puerto Rico and work together with local volunteers.”
William Bermudez, director of Proyecto Angeles INC in Calabazas Arriba, Yabucoa, said: “We are grateful for the support of Woodland, Mr Jorge Coromac and its volunteers because these projects impact the health, economy and environment of our communities.”
The volunteer team had the opportunity to participate in an educational tour in Humacao that included the art museum, the historical plaza and areas of great sociocultural interest.

¡Proyecto de agua en Puerto Rico!
Voluntarios de Woodland del Club Rotario de Lenexa y Shawnee Mission Northwest Interact Club viajaron del 8 al 13 de junio a Puerto Rico para implementar un proyecto de agua en la comunidad de los municipios de Yabucoa y Humacao.
El equipo de voluntarios unificó esfuerzos con los líderes locales, maestros y enfermeras de las comunidades de Yabucoa y Humacao en la implementación del sistema de acceso a proyecto de agua potable, que incluyó la distribución de filtros para purificación de agua, la pintura de un centro comunitario que se utiliza para refugio en caso de desastres naturales, la capacitación en respuesta a desastres naturales, los huertos comunitarios y los campamentos educativos para jóvenes.
El equipo también apoyó la limpieza del jardín comunitario, limpiando una milla de la playa de Maunabo como parte de la preservación del medio ambiente y participó en el la reunión semanal del Club Rotario de Juncos.
“Este es el tercer año que nuestro club y los jóvenes de Shawnee Mission Northwest Interact participan en este programa en coordinación con Woodland Charity que ha apoyado a estas comunidades desde el huracán María en septiembre de 2017”, comentó Steve Adams, próximo presidente del Club Rotario de Lenexa 2025-2026.

El equipo tuvo la oportunidad de participar en un tour educativo en Humacao que incluyó una visita al museo de arte, la plaza histórica y otras zonas de gran interés sociocultural.
