Welcome tourists! In this edition, we have to talk about a city in our neighboring country Mexico, considered by the newspaper, The Financial Times, as one of the best cities in the world to invest because of its high economic potential in Mexico. We talk about San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Founded in 1592 in honor of St. Louis, king of France and patron saint of the region, and also the Potosí mines in Bolivia, it has a population of just over 800,000 inhabitants but it increases to just over 1 million inhabitants in its metro area.
The standard of living in the city is considered one of the highest in Mexico, since it provides a large Gross Domestic Product to the region and the unemployment margin is one of the lowest, in addition to being in broad growth regarding industrial and business areas. All of this while preserving the historical center of the city in perfect condition, thus achieving the recognition of World Heritage by UNESCO.
Round-trip flights from Kansas to San Luis have an average cost of $500 and you can find them with one layover. The most confortable way to move within the city is undoubtedly by foot, since the historical center being so old, it is clearly not suitable for large numbers of vehicles to travel since many of its streets are one lane and there are few places to park. You can find bus and Uber services or rent a car if you are going to move around the city and its nearby towns. The average cost of a room in a 3-star hotel is $50 per night and in a 5-star hotel is $100 per night. As far as gastronomy is concerned, you should not miss the famous enchiladas potosinas that unlike enchiladas from other regions of the country these filled tortillas are closed and fried instead of rolled and only bathed in some sauce. They have a great similarity with the very typical quesadillas of cazón of all Mexico. Also to keep you fresh and satisfied all day, be sure to try both the fruit called prickly pear and the fresh prickly pear water. This fruit comes from the famous nopal plant, which appears on the shield of the Mexican flag, and San Luis is the world capital of the prickly pear. The average cost of a full meal is $7.
The places you should not miss on your next visit to the beautiful city of San Luis are the following:
*Historic Center: World Heritage since 1990. It is characterized by its rich baroque quarry buildings, neoclassical architecture and its cobbled and narrow streets. Do not miss visiting the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Luis Rey which, in addition to being the seat of the archdiocese, is a 17th-century architectural piece made of pink quarry stone and, as a curious fact, it is the only cathedral in the world that it has 24 apostles, 12 made of stone and 12 made of marble. Within the same historical center there are seven famous neighborhoods that were once small towns and are very close to each other. Do not forget to visit each one of them since each one has, in addition to their points of interest, their own stories, stories and legends. These neighborhoods are: Tlaxcala Santiago del Río, Montecillo, San Sebastian, San Juan de Guadalupe, Tequisquiapan and San Miguelito. A good option not only to tour the most important points of the city but to learn the stories behind the city is taking a bus tour, they cost an average of $3 and take 45-minute to 1-hour.
*National Mask Museum: dedicated to protecting and promoting the cultural heritage of pre-Hispanic dances with mask rituals as well as current dances that also involve mask rituals. The collection has more than 1,300 pieces between masks and clothes mainly of Mexican origin, although there is also a special room with masks and clothes from other countries around the world. The entrance fee is $1 and is also located within the Historic Center.
*Tangamanga Park: it is one of the main lungs of the city. Here you will find a zoo, cabin area, playground, courts, museums and even a water park. With all these things to visit it will take you at least a full day to enjoy all that, it has two lakes and is one of the largest urban parks in all of Mexico since it has 420 green hectares. You can access it from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and many of its attractions are free or less than $5.
Finally, if you can take advantage of time and budget to visit some of the nearby towns, I assure you that you won’t regret it. Ciudad Valles is located within a couple of hours; known by all as the Huasteca Potosina Reserve, place we have featured in a previous article.

Conoce San Luis
Bienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de una ciudad de nuestro país vecino México, considerada por el periódico The Financial Times como una de las mejores ciudades en el mundo para invertir debido a su alto potencial económico en México: nos referimos a San Luis Potosí, México. Fundada en el año 1592 en honor a San Luis, Rey de Francia y santo patrono de la región, y también a las minas de Potosí en Bolivia, cuenta con una población apenas superior a los 800 mil habitantes pero presentando un aumento a más de 1 millón de habitantes en su zona metropolitana.
El nivel de vida de la ciudad es considerado uno de los más altos dentro de México, ya que aporta un gran Producto Interno Bruto a la región y el margen de desempleo es de los más bajos, además de que se encuentra en amplio crecimiento en cuanto a zonas industriales y de negocios. Todo esto conservando el casco histórico de la ciudad en perfecto estado, logrando así el reconocimiento de Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO.
Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a San Luis tienen un costo promedio de $500 y los puedes encontrar a partir de una escala. La manera más cómoda de moverse dentro de la ciudad es sin lugar a dudas a pie, ya que el centro histórico al ser tan antiguo, claramente no es el adecuado para que transiten gran cantidad de vehículos ya que muchas de sus calles son de un solo carril y hay pocos lugares donde estacionarse. Puedes encontrar servicio de autobuses y Uber o bien rentar un automóvil si vas a moverte por toda la ciudad y sus pueblitos cercanos. El costo promedio en un hotel 3 estrellas es de $50 la noche y en un hotel 5 estrellas de $100 la noche. En cuanto a gastronomía se trata, no deberás perderte de las famosas enchiladas potosinas que a diferencia de las enchiladas de otras regiones del país estas tortillas rellenas son cerradas y fritas en lugar de enrolladas y sólo bañadas en alguna salsa. Tienen una gran similitud con las quesadillas de cazón muy típicas de todo México. Además para mantenerte fresco y satisfecho todo el día, no dejes de probar tanto la fruta llamada tuna así como el agua fresca de tuna. Este fruto proviene de la famosa planta llamada nopal la cual aparece en el escudo de la bandera de México y San Luis es la capital mundial de la tuna. El costo promedio de una comida completa es de $7.
Los lugares que no debes perderte en tu próxima visita por la hermosa ciudad de San Luis son los siguientes:
*Centro Histórico: Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde el año 1990. Se caracteriza por sus ricas construcciones barrocas de cantera, arquitectura del estilo neoclásico y por sus adoquinadas y estrechas calles. No te pierdas el conocer la Catedral Metropolitana de San Luis Rey que, además de ser la sede de la arquidiócesis, es una pieza arquitectónica del siglo XVII hecha en piedra de cantera rosada y, como dato curioso, es la única catedral en el mundo que cuenta con 24 apóstoles, 12 hechos en piedra y 12 hechos en mármol. Dentro del mismo centro histórico se encuentran siete famosos barrios que en su momento fueron pequeños pueblitos y se encuentran muy cercanos unos de otros. No dejes de visitar cada uno de ellos ya que cada uno tiene además de sus puntos de interés sus propias historias, cuentos y leyendas. Estos barrios son: Tlaxcala Santiago del Río, Montecillo, San Sebastián, San Juan de Guadalupe, Tequisquiapan y San Miguelito. Una buena opción no sólo para recorrer los puntos más importantes de la ciudad sino para conocer las historias detrás de la ciudad es tomando un tour en autobús, tienen un costo promedio de $3 y tienen un recorrido de 45 min a 1 hora.
*Museo Nacional de la Máscara: dedicado a proteger y promover el patrimonio cultural de las danzas prehispánicas con rituales de máscara así como las danzas actuales también que involucran rituales de máscara. La colección cuenta con más de 1,300 piezas entre máscaras y vestimentas principalmente de origen mexicano, aunque también se encuentra una sala especial con máscaras y vestimentas de otros países alrededor del mundo. El costo de entrada es de $1 y también se encuentra dentro del Centro Histórico.
*Parque Tangamanga: es uno de los principales pulmones de la ciudad. Aquí dentro encontrarás un zoológico, zona de cabañas, zona de juego, canchas, museos e incluso un parque acuático. Con todas estas cosas por visitar te llevará por lo menos un día completo poder disfrutar de todo eso, cuenta con dos lagos y es uno de los parques urbanos más grandes de todo México ya que cuenta con 420 hectáreas verdes. Puedes acceder a él desde las 5am hasta las 7pm y gran parte de sus atracciones son gratuitas o con costo menor a los $5.
Por último si puedes aprovechar por tiempo y presupuesto para conocer algunos de los pueblos cercanos te aseguro que no te arrepentirás. A un par de horas se encuentra Ciudad Valles, conocida por todos como la Reserva de la Huasteca Potosina, lugar del que ya hicimos un artículo hace tiempo.
