As part of the research for her most recent book, “She Come by It Natural”, author Sarah Smarsh attended concerts on Dolly Parton’s 2016 tour. The journalist and author noted something “surprising and heartening” – the wondrous all-inclusive heterogeneity of Parton’s fans.
Recounting her concert impressions in an interview with The New York Times, Smarsh said, “If we’re divided at the ballot box but not at a Dolly Parton concert, then maybe there’s hope if we can find the right language for communicating.” She sees Parton as a “unifying and universally beloved figure in the midst of this divisive climate.”
We’re a world at war – neighbor against neighbor, leader against leader, community against community, nation against nation, rich against poor. The grotesque, self-destructive malignancy of the situation inspired the second track on Parton’s new album, Rockstar. In World on Fire, lamenting the state of the world, she sings “it’s not too late to turn it all around.” Show some love. Rise above. Lend a hand. Make a stand. Heal the hurt. Let kindness work. Be a friend. Let hatred end.
Today’s Thanksgiving. Parton’s World on Fire lyrics give us the words by which to celebrate. All around us are people who could use a hand. Some of them may too proud to ask for help. We can reach out anyway while respecting their pride. With so much hurt, hatred, crime and war, it’s time for us all to proactively reach out to each other with help and support. Reflecting on our own blessings this Thanksgiving Day can serve to invigorate personal campaigns to relieve suffering where we can. This slow but steady commitment can eventually lead to restoring peace and unity. Person by person.
