For Hispanics, one of the most important celebrations of the holiday season has not been observed yet: Three Kings Day.
Also called the Epiphany, Three Kings Day takes place on Jan. 6 – the 12th day of Christmas. This year, it falls on a Sunday.
Three Kings Day honors the three kings on their journey following the star to Bethlehem to present gifts to the baby Jesus. According to the Gospel of Matthew, the men traveled by horse, camel and elephant until they found the child of God.
Melchor, Gaspar and Balthazar were the three kings. Melchor brought myrrh, which was used to embalm corpses then, to symbolize humankind’s mortality. Gaspar, the youngest of the three, brought incense to symbolize God and Jesus’ divine nature. Balthazar brought gold to symbolize Jesus’ destiny to become the king of Jews.
As Three Kings Day approaches, children write letters addressed to Melchor, Gaspar and Balthazar. In their letters, they describe how well-behaved they have been all year and ask the kings for gifts. Later, they attach their letters onto balloons that are released into the sky. To be sure the kings will receive their requests, they also leave their favorite shoes under the family Christmas tree with a copy of their wishes. The morning of Three Kings Day, the children get their presents.
Later that day, families gather to taste the rosca de reyes (king’s bread). Traditionally, a baby Jesus figurine is hidden in the rosca. Whoever finds the figurine in his or her slice must prepare tamales for everyone on the Day of the Candles, celebrated on Feb. 2.
Three Kings Day is an excellent tradition that deserves to continue in Hispanic culture. If you want to keep the tradition alive, try following some of the tips below:
*Bake your own rosca: Look for a recipe online. And remember the Jesus figurine!
*Teach your children about the holiday: Tell the story to your kids. Then, make it a family tradition to write letters to the kings together.
*Exchange gifts: Involve the whole family by exchanging symbolic gifts.

Manteniendo viva la celebración del día de los Tres Reyes Magos
Para los hispanos, una de las celebraciones más importantes de la temporada navideña aún no se ha celebrado: el día de los Tres Reyes Magos.
También llamada la Epifanía, el Día de los Tres Reyes Magos se celebra el 6 de enero, el doceavo día de Navidad. Este año, cae un domingo.
El día de los Tres Reyes Magos honra a los Tres Reyes en su viaje siguiendo la estrella a Belén para presentar regalos al niño Jesús. Según el Evangelio de Mateo, los hombres viajaron a caballo, camello y elefante hasta que encontraron al hijo de Dios.
Melchor, Gaspar y Balthazar fueron los Tres Reyes. Melchor trajo mirra, que se usaba para embalsamar cadáveres, para simbolizar la mortalidad de la humanidad. Gaspar, el más joven de los tres, trajo incienso para simbolizar la naturaleza divina de Dios y de Jesús. Balthazar trajo oro para simbolizar el destino de Jesús para convertirse en el rey de los judíos.

* Intercambiar regalos: Involucra a toda la familia intercambiando regalos simbólicos.
