Laura Marquez is celebrating a business milestone.
During October, Marquez Boots, Marquez’s Western wear store, is marking its 20th anniversary. The anniversary celebration events include customer appreciation sales; and a party with food and live music, featuring La Mafia Nortena (Norteña in Spanish) and Grupo Conek-T.
For Marquez, the milestone is about more than business longevity. It is the story of a family that held on through years few customers ever saw.
Marquez and her husband opened the store in 2006. At that time, he was a general manager with the Chipotle restaurant chain and she was a supervisor there. When they decided to take the leap, he kept his job to help cover household expenses and make sure the new business had what it needed, she recalled.
Their first location for Marquez Boots was just for a trial run, Marquez said. Since then, the store has moved five times. Each time, customers have found their way to the new address, she said.
The most difficult time of running the store was when Marquez ran it on her own for 11 years while her husband was in prison, she said. During that time, Marquez raised their four children and kept the business open with help from her parents, she said.
There were moments when Marquez wanted to quit, she said, especially when her youngest daughter asked her to stay home with her and after betrayals by people close to her. What kept her going, she said, was her faith, a friend who helped the family during the most difficult times, customers who encouraged her to stay open, and eventually, her husband’s return.
“They say you don’t know how strong you are until being strong is your only option,” Marquez said. “Of course, it was worth it. Today, I feel very blessed, because everything I thought I had lost, God has given back to me; and I’m not only talking about material things, but wisdom, peace, joy, my husband and my family together. That is worth gold.”
For many customers, shopping at Marquez Boots is as precious as gold. Doing so provides a way of holding on to their roots, Marquez said. She feels fortunate to be part of that culture and to help customers put together an outfit, whether for a night of dancing or a once-in-a-lifetime celebration, she said.
Many customers value like to dress “from head to toe” at Marquez Boots, Marquez said.
Admittedly, Marquez Boots has had to adapt to change over two decades. For example, tastes have changed considerably since the store opened. The store has kept up with new trends for younger and older customers alike, according to Marquez.
Social media has changed how Marquez Boots connects with people, bringing visitors to the store from all over, Marquez said.
After 20 years, Marquez said the store is at its best moment and she’s ready for a new career. Her husband has opened a heating and air conditioning company, and she sees herself joining him there, she said.
The family is open to selling the business to someone with vision and a love for Western wear, Marquez said.
“Thank you, Kansas City and the surrounding area, for so much love and support,” Marquez said.
Marquez advises anyone in the community who’s thinking of opening a business to make sure it’s something they’re truly passionate about and enjoy doing.
