Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine will host its annual gala as a way to raise funds for its renovation work.
On Aug. 30, the Boost and Bling Gala will celebrate the parish’s anniversary. The event starts at 6 p.m. at Boulevard Brewery.
The goal is to raise money to start Phase 2 of a campaign that aims to preserve and enhance the historic shrine through structural repairs, interior renovations and the addition of a Eucharistic adoration chapel. Susan Miller, president of Friends of Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine, who’s leading the campaign, said Phase 1 is completed.
The first phase included work on the roof and gutters. It also included a replacement of the heating system and two new air conditioning units. According to Miller, the second phase will involve painting and ceiling repair.
“Before the roof, there had been some water damage, so we have to replace that ceiling, update the wiring,” she said. “We would like to do flooring as well and like to make the sound system better.”
Miller said the parish wants to raise as much money as possible, but the goal is to raise $25,000 with the gala alone.
Following Phase 2, the parish has a third and final phase planned. It involves constructing the Eucharistic chapel.
The renovations will help preserve a piece of history for Kansas City, Missouri’s Hispanic community, particularly the Mexican population. When the shrine opened early in the 20th century, Mexican immigrants back then didn’t have a place to worship. Eventually, the shrine became that place.
“They brought a piece of their faith from home and put it right here, planted the seeds right here in our community,” Miller said, “and it’s so important that we continue that legacy, so that way, we can continue this for our children and for the future when we’re gone.”
For Miller, the renovation effort is fundamental, especially today.
“It’s important to our community to always have a representation, to always be a beacon of welcome for immigrants that come to the area,” she said.

Santuario de la Virgen de Guadalupe se prepara para su gala anual
El Santuario de la Virgen de Guadalupe celebrará su gala anual para recaudar fondos para su renovación.
El 30 de agosto, la Gala “Boost and Bling” conmemorará el aniversario de la parroquia. El evento comienza a las 6 p.m. en Boulevard Brewery.
El objetivo es recaudar fondos para iniciar la Fase 2 de una campaña que busca preservar y mejorar el histórico santuario mediante reparaciones estructurales, renovaciones interiores y la construcción de una capilla de adoración eucarística. Susan Miller, presidenta de Amigos del Santuario de la Virgen de Guadalupe, quien lidera la campaña, informó que la Fase 1 ya está terminada.
La primera fase incluyó trabajos en el techo y las canaletas, así como el reemplazo del sistema de calefacción y la instalación de dos nuevas unidades de aire acondicionado. Según Miller, la segunda fase consistirá en pintar y reparar el techo.
“Antes de la reparación del techo, hubo daños por agua, así que tenemos que reemplazar el techo y actualizar el cableado”, explicó. “También nos gustaría cambiar el piso y mejorar el sistema de sonido”.
Miller dijo que la parroquia quiere recaudar la mayor cantidad de dinero posible, pero la meta es recaudar $25,000 solo con la gala.
Tras la Fase 2, la parroquia tiene prevista una tercera y última fase: la construcción de la capilla eucarística.
Las renovaciones ayudarán a preservar una parte de la historia de la comunidad hispana de Kansas City, Missouri, en particular de la población mexicana. Cuando el santuario abrió sus puertas a principios del siglo XX, los inmigrantes mexicanos no tenían un lugar donde practicar su fe. Con el tiempo, el santuario se convirtió en ese lugar.
“Trajeron una parte de su fe de su tierra natal y la depositaron aquí, sembrando las semillas en nuestra comunidad”, dijo Miller, “y es muy importante que continuemos con ese legado, para que podamos seguir transmitiéndolo a nuestros hijos y a las generaciones futuras”.
Para Miller, el esfuerzo de renovación es fundamental, especialmente hoy en día.
“Es importante para nuestra comunidad tener siempre una representación, ser siempre un faro de bienvenida para los inmigrantes que llegan a la zona”, afirmó.
