Former Casa Grande employees become owners, share their success story

By Melissa Arroyo
For many years, Karen Manzanares dreamed of owning a restaurant and club. She spent hours of the day thinking about every detail and sharing it with her family and friends.
“Even my 22-year-old son remembers hearing about it when he was a little kid,” Manzanares said.
Manzanares said she knew that her passion for music and determination to see her dream accomplished would help her see it through. And now, she has fulfilled her dream: She’s the co-owner of Casa Grande Restaurant & Lounge at 700 Southwest Blvd. in Kansas City, Mo.
Coincidentally, for a year, Manzanares worked at Casa Grande with her brother, Marlon Manzanares, who was the disc jockey there on weekends and increased the number of visitors. He never thought he and his sister would have the opportunity to own it.
“While having lunch with the previous owner one day, he told us he was going to lease the business to someone else,” Marlo said. “When we told him we would like to take over the business, he thought it was a great idea.”
Fast forward to June this year, when Casa Grande opened its doors under new ownership. Although the opportunity to own the location presented itself out of the blue, the brother and sister were ready for the responsibilities that faced them.
Karen said her passion helped her get through the arduous process of paperwork, some remodeling and hearing people tell her that she would not accomplish her dream. And now that she has fulfilled part of her dream of owning a business, she has another dream: keeping the business running.
“The dream has been accomplished, but keeping it afloat is more difficult than getting there,” she said. “Having a good team, as well as keeping our guests happy, is the most important part.”
According to the Manzanares siblings, they wanted something different than a nightclub, so they made every effort to make the location a relaxed, safe environment for their customers. Karen believes the guests have responded positively to the changes, based on her interaction with them and their continued support.
