Sebastien de la Cruz, conocido por su apodo “El Charro de Oro” -ha descubierto su pasión en la vida: la música
Específicamente, de la Cruz tiene una pasión por la música de mariachi. Al demostrarle al mundo de lo que es capaz de hacer musicalmente, el adolescente desea promover la cultura de mariachi. Durante una reciente entrevista con Dos Mundos, el joven habló sobre sus planes y carrera musical.
Dos Mundos: Háblanos un poco sobre ti.
Sebastien De La Cruz: Tengo 13 años de edad. Vivo en San Antonio, Texas. Curso el octavo grado y soy un cantante de mariachi.
DM: ¿Hablas español?
SDLC: Muy poquito.
DM: ¿Qué significa la música para ti. ¿Por qué escogiste la música?
SDLC: Bueno… escogí la música porque es una forma de expresarte. Para mí, es una forma de expresar lo que siento sobre mi cultura -y escogí la música porque me encanta. Para mí… lo más importante (sobre la música) es que es una manera de expresarte.
DM: ¿Por qué escogiste la música ranchera?
SDLC: Escogí la música ranchera porque crecí escuchando música de mariachi… un día, vi a un grupo de mariachis y me hizo sentir como si estuviera abriendo los ojos por primera vez. Fue tan hermoso que solamente pensé, esto es parte de mi cultura. Entonces, crecí con una gran pasión por ello.
DM:¿Tú admiras a algún cantante de ranchero?
SDLC: Bueno… realmente admiro a Javier Solís, José Alfredo Jiménez, Pepe Aguilar -todos los pioneros de la música ranchera.
DM:¿Tienes una canción favorita?
SDLC: Tendría que escoger “Payaso” de Javier Solís.
DM: ¿Qué sentiste cuando te escogieron para cantar el himno nacional durante las finales de la NBA?
SDLC: Para mí, significó demostrarles a todos mi cultura como canto. Aunque soy mexicano americano puedo cantar…como cualquier otra persona.
DM:¿Qué le dirías a otros niños que quieren seguir una carrera en la música?
SDLC: Yo… les diría que sí aman lo que hacen, que lo sigan haciendo. Si los hace sonreír, entonces te da algo mayor para hacer. Pero hacerlo solamente si te encanta.
DM: ¿Puedes hablar sobre tu último álbum?
SDLC: Salió hace un tiempo. Voy a empezar a trabajar en el próximo. El nombre de mi álbum es “Tuyo”, y mi canción favorita es “Tuyo”, y es una canción original.
DM:¿Tú compones canciones?
SDLC: Compongo un poco, pero las canciones en mi CD no son mis composiciones. Las canciones que están en mi álbum fueron escritas por fabulosos amigos míos. Sus nombres son Pete Moreno, Cassandra Trejo y Baldomar.
DM:¿Cuándo planeas empezar a trabajar en tu próximo CD?
SDLC: No estoy muy seguro, solamente sé que tarde o temprano estaré trabajando en algo.
DM: ¿Cómo te sientes sobre llegar hasta este punto? ¿Dónde te ves en el futuro?
SDLC: Me veo cantando mariachi y continuar con lo que ya inicié.
DM: ¿Cuáles son tus pasatiempos?
SDLC: Me gusta jugar fútbol, basquetbol, videojuegos y pasar tiempo con mis amigos
DM: Estuviste en Kansas City para la conferencia de la NCLR. Por favor manda un mensaje a la gente en Kansas City.
SDLC: Quiero decirles que fue un honor estar allí, agrade-cerles por haberme invitado y quiero regresar de nuevo.

Getting to know “El Charro de Oro”

Sebastien De La Cruz – known by his nickname “El Charro de Oro” – has discovered his passion in life: music.
Specifically, De La Cruz has a passion for Mariachi music. In showing the world what he’s capable of doing musically, the teen-ager wants to promote Mariachi culture. During a recent interview with Dos Mundos, the youngster discussed his music career and his plans.
Dos Mundos: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Sebastien De La Cruz: I’m 13 years old. I live in San Antonio, Texas. I’m an eighth-grader and I’m a Mariachi singer.
DM: ¿Hablas español? (Do you speak Spanish?)
SDLC: Muy poquito. (Very little.)
DM: What does music mean to you, Sebastien? Why did you pick music?
SDLC: Well, … I picked music because (it) is a form of expressing yourself. For me, it is a way to express how I feel about my culture – and I just picked music because I love it. To me, … the most important (thing about music) is that music is a way to express yourself.
DM: Why did you pick ranchera?
SDLC: I picked ranchera because I grew up listening to Mariachi music…. One day, I saw a group of Mariachis and (it) made me feel like I was opening my eyes for the first time. It was so beautiful that I just thought this is part of my culture. So then, I grew up (with) a big passion for it.
DM: Do you admire any ranchero singers?
SDLC: Well, … I really admire Javier Solis, Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Pepe Aguilar – all the pioneers of Ranchera music.
DM: Do you have a favorite song?
SDLC: I (would) have to pick “Payaso” from Javier Solis.
DM: What did you feel when you got picked to sing the national anthem during the NBA Finals?
SDLC: To me, it meant just showing everybody my culture how I sing. Even though I’m Mexican-American, I can sing … (like) anybody else.
DM: What would you tell other children who want to pursue a career in music?
SDLC: I … (would) tell them, if you love what you do, just keep doing it. If it makes you smile, then it gives you a bigger thing to do it. But just do it because you love it.
DM: Can you talk about your last album?
SDLC: It came out a while ago. I’m going to start working on the next one. My album’s name is “Tuyo” – and my favorite song is “Tuyo,” and it is an original song.
DM: Do you write songs?
SDLC: I write a little bit, but the songs on my CD are not my songs. The songs that are on my album are songs … (were) written by some great friends of mine. Their names are Pete Moreno, Cassandra Trejo and Baldomar.
DM: When are you planning to start working on your next CD?
SDLC: I’m not really sure. I just know that, sooner or later, I’ll be working on something.
DM: How do you feel about getting to this point? Where do you see yourself in the future?
SDLC: I see myself singing Mariachi and continuing what I started.
DM: What are your hobbies?
SDLC: I like to play football, basketball, play videogames and hang out with my friends.
